I am taking a trip across the US next year and flying between Vegas and JFK with AA on a BA booking. As a BA silver I can book main cabin extra but was wondering if I can use Avios to upgrade to first? Is this possible and how do I check availability?

It is possible. If there’s space you should be able to do it on BA’s website.
