Huh: Global Airlines Tickets Now On Sale, First Class For $9K

64

Global Airlines has just put its first flights on sale. I’m so confused… sometimes reality is crazier than fiction.

Global Airlines plans May 2025 launch, or something

I’ve written extensively about Global Airlines, an “airline startup” that plans to fly Airbus A380s. Global Airlines has for a long time claimed that its inaugural flight would be around the corner, despite little progress when it comes to getting the regulatory approval needed to operate flights (instead, months and months have been spent repainting the company’s A380).

A few weeks ago, Global Airlines teased that it would soon put tickets on sale, encouraging travelers to “secure [their] place in aviation history.” Well, I’ll be darned, tickets are now on sale. The two inaugural itineraries will look as follows (notice the daytime flights in both directions):

  • Global Airlines will operate a Glasgow (GLA) to New York (JFK) itinerary, departing on May 15 and returning on May 19
  • Global Airlines will operate a Manchester (MAN) to New York (JFK) itinerary, departing on May 21 and returning on May 25

I’m not sure if they’re just parking the A380 at JFK for four days at a time, or what’s going on there…

Global Airlines’ initial flight schedule

It’s worth noting that Global Airlines isn’t operating these flights under its own air operator certificate, but instead, they’re being operated by Portuguese charter company Hi Fly. So presumably it’ll be Hi Fly pilots and flight attendants operating these flights… which makes you wonder what exactly Global Airlines has been doing flight attendant recruiting for. Hi Fly actually has experience with the A380, as the company briefly operated the world’s first secondhand A380.

Global Airlines’ website is now live for reservations for these trips.

Global Airlines’ flight booking page

So, how much are tickets? It’s only possible to book roundtrip tickets with a European origin. Looking at the Glasgow to New York trip, all-in fares are as follows:

  • First class fares are £6,829.35 (~$8,996)
  • Business class fares are £3,700.41 (~$4,875)
  • Economy class fares are £778.62 (~$1,026)

What on earth is even going on here?!

I’ve long said that Global Airlines is an unserious company, and I still believe that. Is the A380 that the company acquired airworthy? Of course. Is Hi Fly an expert in operating flights, and capable of operating Global Airlines’ A380? Of course.

Do I think that Global Airlines will ever operate regularly scheduled flights under its own air operator certificate? If you ask me, it’s highly unlikely, because nothing about this company adds up, and the people behind it are pretty questionable, for reasons I’ve outlined here.

So, what’s going on with these two roundtrip inaugural flights from Glasgow and Manchester to New York? I… really have absolutely no clue what’s going on anymore.

For one, what’s the point of these flights, exactly? Are they trying to figure out how big the market is for four-day drips between Glasgow and New York with zero flexibility over a random week in May? Or is this basically a trip designed specifically for aviation geeks, who are willing to position to Europe?

And of course the costs here are way higher than the other airlines in the market that you could fly. Over $1,000 in economy, and $9,000 in first class?! Are people really going to spring for that?

Look, I’m so tempted to book this flight. The airline has been hyping so much how amazing the inflight experience will be, and I just can’t help but picture myself sitting in a broken former China Southern seat, eating a boxed sandwich. And to drop $5-8K on that experience, if it even happens?!

Honestly, this all just keeps getting stranger, and I can’t wait to see how the coming weeks play out. To me, the biggest mystery with Global Airlines continues to be what the motive is for what’s going on here. If the people behind the company were serious about starting an airline, this isn’t how you’d go about it. Meanwhile I don’t see any obvious grift here, so it’s not like they’re fundraising super aggressively. It’s all very strange.

Bottom line

Global Airlines claims that it will launch in May 2025, with tickets now being on sale. The company will for some reason launch two roundtrip itineraries to New York, each with a four day layover, out of Glasgow and Manchester. Fares aren’t cheap, and start at over $1,000 in economy, and $9,000 in first class.

These will be operated in partnership with Hi Fly, so this doesn’t actually get the airline any closer to launching scheduled operations under its own air operator certificate.

What a world, what a world…

What do you make of this Global Airlines ticket sale situation?

Regardless of whether this airline succeed or not, the CEO has done something that you (Ben) won't probably be able to replicate, ever. He was able to launch his airline which is probably a lot more than you will ever achieve in your life.

Hi Ben, interesting article. But you know what also would be a great topic: „Booked: My Celtic adventure to the Scottish Museum of Transport and Travel with Global Airlines.“

  3. Andy Guest

Data points from trying to do a dummy booking:

-Was unable to select a seat. While a seat map was shown, All economy seats were "unavailable"
-Payment screen was weird. It was using a Shopify/Google Pay. had to click like 3 times.
-Only VISA/MC accepted. No Amex which I though was weird because they had some deal with Amex previously announced

    Very strange.

Do it Ben. Set up a gofundme if you really need to, I'd for sure throw some cash your way to make this happen

That's $9K you may never see again.

How many hours has this plane done in the air recently? Will it reliably fly all the way across the Atlantic without a problem? What are the divert airports? Shannon? Reykjavik? Nuuk?

Should Ben book a night in Reykjavik Edition now, to ensure he doesn't have to spend the night on the terminal floor?

    So many questions.

  7. frrp Diamond

Its not really a global airlines flight. Its operated by hi-fly, so it'll be a fully wet lease flight. The only thing 'global airlines' about it might be the logo on the ticket.

  8. Icarus Guest

Ben, so you are tempted to book this flight. Make sure you can do a chargeback.

How will it compare with Air France's La Premiere ?

Global's exclusive lounges at GLA and MAN with Alain Ducasse catering lol

  9. Klaus_S Gold

Hey Ben, Do we need to start a petition or did you already book your economy class ticket?
I am desperate to know if Global Airlines offers paid upgrades and if they match your Starlux status?

  10. chris w Guest

This is up there with the new La Premiere for the most important flight you should review Ben

  11. Maxi Guest

Could also the plane never takes off and you’re just rebooked onto BA. This might not even be a big violation of contract of carriage and they might still make a profit / minimize losses.

  12. David Diamond

This would definitely be interesting. I don't know if it's 5k-9k interesting, but at least you can expense it.

  13. NW Guest

I'm sure if Ben does a gofundme for this (if he's unwilling to pay out of pocket), he'll raise enough for his hubby and bub for the tickets and they can do an economy, business and first class review (bub in first of course).

  14. Samo Guest

Using HiFly AOC does not imply HiFly cabin crews. It is very much possible that the flights will have Global's CC.

And as a side note, some people - including aviation geeks - live in Europe and don't need to "position* here :) I assume that's the target group of this .

    1. Stanley C Diamond

@Samo I think the question should be does Global Airlines even have their own trained and certified cabin crew. That may be the case but I am not sure.

  15. Speedbird Guest

I would pay money to see Ben on this flight

  16. Timtamtrak Diamond

Having followed this since the beginning, it would be quite interesting to see this through the lens of your eye, Ben. It’s a lot of money that could surely go to something more interesting or useful, but oh lord it’s tempting.

  17. Andrew Guest

    Guys doing great work.
Strongly recommend to visit Glasgow and take that flight.

  18. rrapynot Guest

I like that the fares are changeable but they only have a single flight scheduled for each route.

  19. FrozenKiwi Guest

do you think they’ll even let Ben fly? Surely they must know this won’t live up to the hype. So it wouldn’t surprise me if they would just want it to be fans and not real reviews.

  20. Andrew Diamond

As long as you have good trip insurance, I'm admittedly with the mob here.

It'd make for an entertaining review, even if it's a s**tshow. ...or it might be fantastic and then we will know one of the trustpilot reviews is probably not fake. ;)

  21. Mike Guest

I am with the guys encouraging Ben to do it. In all honesty, trip reviews must become pretty boring to write after a while. Yes - Emirates has unlimited caviar, Austrian has great coffee. This could be an epic review whether it's great or terrible.
Plus - it's a shortish flight, assuming the plane takes off and lands, why not?

Hey VT-CIE or whatever name of the month you're using.

This IS the time to pressure OMAAT.

Legal daylight robbery? CSN A380s aren't worth $9K, no wifi, entertainment system is 2010 standard, dogshit maintenance.

  25. Blutravels Guest

Please book a seat! It will be like Fyre Festival for a geeks!

You really do have to just book this. Worst case charge it back if the whole thing never materialises

Don't encourage Ben. Global is a nothingburger and their inaugural will be a fiasco, or a bore. But it kinda pushes his buttons and he might not have the power to resist.

  33. mkleiderman Guest

What happened to Global Airlines signature Gamer class?

    1. Paul Guest

Exactly, so much of the press was about their rather innovative cabin interiors, can't help but think that commencing operations using a retired China Southern interior will worsen their reputation even more.
At least Riyadh Air had the sense to delay their launch until they received their own aircraft with their own interiors, and not damage their reputation from the start by launching with second hand Saudia planes.

    Do it Ben!!!

You owe us readers. We pay your salary. Use some of that for an inside scoop on Global Airlines' inaugural flight.

I'm sure that will be your most read review of 2025!

    1. JB Guest

Just to clarify, I think most of us will be satisfied with you booking a ticket in Economy. No need to spend $9K on a First Class ticket.

This could be the first ever medium haul Economy Class review on OMAAT!

If I had to guess, when they raised some money there was a condition attached to operate flights by a particular date (perhaps even from separate airports) and that's the only reason they're doing these initial flights -- to satisfy the conditions of a fundraise which may either unlock more money or where failure to do so has penalties.

Interestingly, there's only 1 F seat left on the 18th. This might be your last chance, @Ben!

@Lucky you owe it to us! Please!?!?!? You’re *literally* the most qualified person in the world to take this flight and report back. I’ll even send you my Global Airlines sweatshirt to wear on the flight :)

Reality really is stranger than fiction. Who knew a Skadden partner making over $6MM would post so often as to make Diamond status on OMAAT?
