American Invests In Improving Aircraft Cabin Maintenance & Cleanliness

23

American Airlines has been making a lot of improvements as of late. Or at a minimum, the airline has been making a lot of positive announcements, though it’ll take years for the airline to fully see them through.

Often the things that give passengers a negative impression of a flight are as simple as poor cabin maintenance and cleanliness. Along those lines, American seems to have plans to meaningfully invest in this. To me, that shows how serious executives at the airline are about making changes.

American launches “OneCabin” program to improve cabin appearance

JonNYC reports how on September 14, 2026, American will launch an internal program known as “OneCabin,” with the goal of improving cabin cleanliness, appearance, and functionality, across the fleet.

In order to make this happen, the airline is reportedly adding over 60 maintenance technicians, and is deploying them across the major hubs, to speed up cabin repairs, and improve the passenger experience.

Since this project involves maintenance technicians, it sounds like this wouldn’t be about cabin cleanliness as such (since it’s usually contracted workers taking care of that), but instead, bigger picture things, like broken seats, entertainment screens, tray tables, etc.

American is obviously serious about changing for the better

As I’ve said, it’s great to see the direction things are headed at American, as management is clearly trying to invest in the passenger experience. This doesn’t just come in the form of splashy announcements about what we’ll see in the future, but it’s also about investing in the areas that make less of a headline, but which still make a meaningful difference for passengers.

This is the perfect example of that, and about the importance of getting the basics right. After all, often the things that leave passengers with a positive impression aren’t the bells and whistles, but instead, delivering on the basics — flights operating on schedule, cabins that are clean and functioning, etc.

So I commend American for this. That’s not to say that I’m giving legacy management much credit, since they’re the reason American is in the situation it’s currently in, after being asleep at the wheel for well over five years. But I’m generally encouraged by American’s relatively new Chief Commercial Officer, Nat Pieper, who seems to be pushing things in this direction.

Bottom line

In September 2026, American plans to launch a new cabin maintenance program. With this, we’ll see 60+ maintenance technicians based at major hubs, specifically to resolve cabin issues ASAP. This will include everything from broken seats to broken entertainment screens.

All too often it takes airlines a long time to fix cabin issues once reported, so hopefully this makes a meaningful difference.

What do you make of American investing in cabin maintenance?

Fly American exclusively at least monthly and have always experienced clean cabins even late in the day.
Stuck window shades or torn seat back pockets are another story.

I will keep a positive attitude about all the improvements! As a retired AA employee I really want AA to get to the top again!! It will take lots of work, and it will start with greeting every single passenger at the aircraft door with a huge smile and great service!!! Pass this along!! It starts with a smile from checkin to goodbyes!!! Then comes great food, great aircraft seats, cleanliness, great uniforms(new professional design),...

I sure hope so!!

To be fair, you are not getting great food on the majority of airlines worldwide. Some are better but never in the realm of great. Partly because human taste buds react differently at pressurized high-altitude. One exception in Air France whose food quality is far superior in J class compared to any US airline (yes, including golden child Delta... cough cough).

So either they are already up to standards at JFK and ORD or they’re just neglecting 2 of their important bases?

I hope this really works. Last LHR-DFW on 773 business class a month ago, all four headsets provided did not work. Also I think it's time to bring back IFE for single aisle planes

Wow. That's not surprising. When I flew the 77W in J the seat acted like it was about to give out and stop adjusting. I've also seen the LH 744 main cabin have so many seats not recline the flight attendants just suggested moving wherever you can find an opening, before everyone else does.

This is a great selling point for American.

"At American Airlines, we're going to start cleaning the insides of our planes sometimes, and vacuum occasionally, and wipe others' face grease off the windows once a week - FLY US! SOMETIMES A FEW OF OUR PLANES WILL BE LESS FILTHY!"

One can see the stock price shooting up like a rocket on Monday.

You can look at it as a positive. However to me it firms up my belief that they have neglected the fleet and recognize that things were really bad. What have these 60 people been doing in the past?

    1. TravelinWilly Diamond

The way I read it is that there will be 60 new hires, though it's not explicitly stated.

Yeah that’s great, however, on a recent trip, I had to sit in the regular size seat because I was making last-minute changes. I normally sit in the extra legroom. It is pathetic how American is cramming people in these flights. It’s just should not be that tight that is absolutely ridiculous.

    1. Timo Diamond

Almost all airlines in the US have squeezed in more seats. AA is not the worst offender.

Their approach to maintenance is a joke. On weds I flew LAX-ORD on a 737 and 1 of 3 lavs was inop. On the return flight, 13 year old 321, certain seats (including mine) were comically squeaky. A very loud squeaky. With even the slightest movement. So I think they’re going to need to hire more than 60 people if they’re going to want to make a meaningful difference on their approach to maintenance.

Right? Seems like such an easy fix. We were all laughing about it. Seemed limited to rows 8 and 11 so prob mostly EP pax

It speaks volumes when any airline has to announce that they will improve cleanliness and basic stuff.

@ hbilbao -- In fairness to American, they're not actually announcing this. Instead, it's just based on some internal info picked up by JonNYC.

That's encouraging - I feel like for over 10 years 19 out of 20 announcements/ changes AA was making were for the negative. There are so very few things I miss about them - but bracing myself to read about an announced change was definitely never one of them lol - this one though sounds good and necessary.

Maybe I'm just getting lucky but it seems like at gate maintenance issues are being resolved quicker. At one point as soon as the gate agent or Captain said "we have Maintenance coming on" you knew it was going to be at least a 2-3 hour ordeal.

  12. betterbub Diamond

Doesn't sound like a negative so I'm down, but on AA I don't notice a higher frequency of broken equipment on flights
