American Airlines has been making a lot of improvements as of late. Or at a minimum, the airline has been making a lot of positive announcements, though it'll take years for the airline to fully see them through.

Doesn't sound like a negative so I'm down, but on AA I don't notice a higher frequency of broken equipment on flights

Maybe I'm just getting lucky but it seems like at gate maintenance issues are being resolved quicker. At one point as soon as the gate agent or Captain said "we have Maintenance coming on" you knew it was going to be at least a 2-3 hour ordeal.

That's encouraging - I feel like for over 10 years 19 out of 20 announcements/ changes AA was making were for the negative. There are so very few things I miss about them - but bracing myself to read about an announced change was definitely never one of them lol - this one though sounds good and necessary.

It speaks volumes when any airline has to announce that they will improve cleanliness and basic stuff.

@ hbilbao -- In fairness to American, they're not actually announcing this. Instead, it's just based on some internal info picked up by JonNYC.

Their approach to maintenance is a joke. On weds I flew LAX-ORD on a 737 and 1 of 3 lavs was inop. On the return flight, 13 year old 321, certain seats (including mine) were comically squeaky. A very loud squeaky. With even the slightest movement. So I think they’re going to need to hire more than 60 people if they’re going to want to make a meaningful difference on their approach to maintenance.

Yeah that’s great, however, on a recent trip, I had to sit in the regular size seat because I was making last-minute changes. I normally sit in the extra legroom. It is pathetic how American is cramming people in these flights. It’s just should not be that tight that is absolutely ridiculous.

Almost all airlines in the US have squeezed in more seats. AA is not the worst offender.

The Pieper / Garboden era seems to be de facto here.

You can look at it as a positive. However to me it firms up my belief that they have neglected the fleet and recognize that things were really bad. What have these 60 people been doing in the past?

The way I read it is that there will be 60 new hires, though it's not explicitly stated.

This is a great selling point for American.

"At American Airlines, we're going to start cleaning the insides of our planes sometimes, and vacuum occasionally, and wipe others' face grease off the windows once a week - FLY US! SOMETIMES A FEW OF OUR PLANES WILL BE LESS FILTHY!"

One can see the stock price shooting up like a rocket on Monday.

I hope this really works. Last LHR-DFW on 773 business class a month ago, all four headsets provided did not work. Also I think it's time to bring back IFE for single aisle planes

Wow. That's not surprising. When I flew the 77W in J the seat acted like it was about to give out and stop adjusting. I've also seen the LH 744 main cabin have so many seats not recline the flight attendants just suggested moving wherever you can find an opening, before everyone else does.

So either they are already up to standards at JFK and ORD or they’re just neglecting 2 of their important bases?

I agree with your take on this.

I will keep a positive attitude about all the improvements! As a retired AA employee I really want AA to get to the top again!! It will take lots of work, and it will start with greeting every single passenger at the aircraft door with a huge smile and great service!!! Pass this along!! It starts with a smile from checkin to goodbyes!!! Then comes great food, great aircraft seats, cleanliness, great uniforms(new professional design), well maintained aircrafts, and everything put together maybe AA will go up in rankings!! I sure hope so!!

To be fair, you are not getting great food on the majority of airlines worldwide. Some are better but never in the realm of great. Partly because human taste buds react differently at pressurized high-altitude. One exception in Air France whose food quality is far superior in J class compared to any US airline (yes, including golden child Delta... cough cough).

Fly American exclusively at least monthly and have always experienced clean cabins even late in the day.
Stuck window shades or torn seat back pockets are another story.
