IHG has just released their new PointBreaks list, so if you might be interested in making a booking, check out the list now (especially as IHG didn’t release a preview list this time around, so all of these hotels come as a surprise).

IHG’s revamped PointBreaks promotion

At the beginning of the year IHG revamped their PointBreaks promotion. This is a promotion they’ve been offering on a quarterly basis for years, which allows you to book select hotels for just 5,000 points per night. Given that I value IHG points at ~0.5 cents each, that’s the equivalent of paying just ~$25 per night for a hotel room, which is a steal.

The issue is that the quality of the hotels on the lists had been gradually decreasing over the years, to the point that many of us didn’t even bother trying with the promotion anymore. It was great if you happened to be traveling to somewhere that had a PointBreaks hotel, but otherwise just wasn’t worth going out of your way for.

So IHG changed up their PointBreaks promotion earlier this year, and more specifically, now charges 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 points per night through PointBreaks. IHG is promising that they’ll offer more hotels than in the past, and presumably higher quality hotels as well.

The next PointBreaks list has just gone live, and is valid for stays through February 28, 2019. The better hotels tend to sell out pretty quickly (as there are capacity constraints), so you’ll want to book sooner rather than later.

You can also use Cash & Points

Now that some PointBreaks hotels cost 10,000 and 15,000 points per night, you can redeem part points and part cash for these bookings, to lower the price by 5,000 to 10,000 points per night. The price varies by property, but typically you can expect to pay about $50 to lower the cost by 5,000 points, and to pay $80 to lower the cost by 10,000 points. Personally I don’t think this represents a very good deal.

Get a fourth night free with the IHG Premier Card

While this is a great promotion, there’s potentially a way to get even more value. Specifically, if you have the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card then you get the fourth night free on award redemptions, including on PointBreaks bookings.

Buy IHG points with a 100% bonus

If there’s an IHG hotel on the list that you’d get value out of but you don’t have enough IHG points, you can receive up to a 100% bonus when you purchase points by November 30, 2018. You can get a 100% bonus as long as you purchase at least 5,000 points in one transaction.

This is an opportunity to purchase IHG points for just 0.5 cents each. At most you could purchase 200,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $1,000.

IHG’s new PointBreaks list

Below is IHG’s full PointBreaks list, though let me first note the four InterContinental hotels on the list (which is alright, but not amazing — the last list had 11):

  1. Wow, they sure managed to KILL this in just a few months! Almost no value left. Used to be 5k per night for ALL hotels. Now only TWO in the US at that level, and most of the rest only in China. Thieves!!!

  2. Hi FlyLots…..

The hotel pictured is the 15K per night InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach Resort in Vietnam.

  3. Wow. Only two 5,000 point properties in the whole US. Last year the Staybridge Suites Canton, OH was 5K. Now it’s doubled to 10K.
It’s still a good deal for a Christmas stay, but it’s doubled. Even the 15K’s are not that great for the most part.

  4. IHG is dead to me. Mr. Wonderful would agree. IHG points are close to worthless. I like the Intercontinental, Kimpton and Indigo hotels. But redeeming points is near impossible in these hotels, and if any space is available it is in the lowest tier room. For example, we are off to Singapore in February on SQ 21/22 (paid PE, upgrade to business class with membership miles). The intercontinental at Bugis is nice, but only one class of room available for 30,000 points or SD 156 (about $115). No points, points + cash for any of the good rooms. Further, I am flying out to SEA this Saturday to see my son (trying Jet Blue Mint for the first time). He is in Wenatchee WA, so I booked a Holiday Inn Express for 25,000 points. The room goes for $120 fully refundable. I value IHG points at about .3 cents each, if they are worth anything. The proper term is, I believe, oobatz. This most definitely not aspirational.

I booked the Intercontinental Montreal thru the IHG Web site a short while ago. Next time I will use Hotels.com. I have earned my last IHG point. No value to me. Hotels.com offers a 10% return (free night every 10 nights, value is the average of the cost of your paid stays). I have 4 of those, so we will bunk at the Mandarin Oriental in a club room and use the 4 nights to hedge the cost by about $800. I am driving cross country with my son next week and will burn up the balance of my IHG points at Holiday Inns as we go. After that, IHG is dead to me.
