The luxury hotel market is more competitive than ever before. Not only are the major hotel groups (everything from Four Seasons to Ritz-Carlton) growing at a fast pace, but we’re seeing growth from all kinds of smaller hotel groups as well. In this post I wanted to cover the basics of Cheval Blanc, as the portfolio has recently grown. I’ve been lucky enough to stay at three of the brand’s properties.

What are Cheval Blanc hotels, and why are they special?

Cheval Blanc (which means “white horse” in French) is a boutique uber-luxury hotel group that’s owned by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton).

There are a few luxury goods company that have gotten into the hotel business (BVLGARI is another one), and there’s always the question of whether they’re style over substance. What impresses me about Cheval Blanc is that it’s both style and substance. As you’d expect from a French hotel brand, Cheval Blanc has a huge emphasis on both design and food, and that’s reflected in each of the properties.

So let’s go over the details of those — where does Cheval Blanc have properties, and what’s the best way to book them?

Where are Cheval Blanc hotels located?

Cheval Blanc currently has six properties (known as “maisons”), with at least one more confirmed to be in the pipeline (in Porto Cervo, Italy, due to open in 2026). Of the current properties, one is a city hotel and five are resorts. While Cheval blanc isn’t necessarily targeted primarily at French consumers, the properties are located in destinations that are popular with the French (or those who love France).

Let’s go over the basics of each of the Cheval Blanc locations.

Cheval Blanc Randheli Maldives

Cheval Blanc Randheli Maldives is a 46-room island getaway in one of the most beautiful places in the world, which opened in 2013.

While there are lots of amazing luxury resorts in the Maldives, there’s a lot that makes Cheval Blanc special, from the private seaplane, to the property being spread out over six islands, to the ~440 employees for just 46 rooms, to the signature Le 1947 restaurant, which would probably be Michelin-starred if that existed in the Maldives.

The resort is open for most of the year, though closes for two months each summer, from late May until late July.

Cheval Blanc Paris

Cheval Blanc Paris is a 72-room city hotel, which marks a new era for the brand. The hotel just opened in 2021, so it’s also Cheval Blanc’s newest property. I stayed at this property shortly after it opened, and was amazed by the design.

The property has the nicest indoor pool I’ve ever seen at a city hotel, and the hotel’s Plénitude restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars within six months of opening, which is impressive. Many rooms at the hotel have views of the Seine, with floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hotel is open year-round.

Cheval Blanc Courchevel

Cheval Blanc Courchevel is a 36-room ski resort in France, which opened in 2006, and was the first-ever Cheval Blanc property (I recently visited Courchevel, but stayed at Les Airelles, which was incredible as well). In addition to offering ski-in/ski-out, the property also has Le 1947, which has three Michelin stars.

The resort is open seasonally, generally from December through early April.

Cheval Blanc Courchevel

Cheval Blanc St-Barth

Cheval Blanc St-Barth is a 61-room beach resort in the Caribbean. While the hotel first opened in 1991, it was acquired by Cheval Blanc in 2013, and underwent an extensive renovation. The property is set on Flamonds Bay, and offers two restaurants and a spa. I stayed at this property recently, and had a great experience.

The resort is open for most of the year, though generally closes in mid-August through mid-November.

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is a 30-room resort in the French Riviera that opened in 2019. The hotel is located in town near the port, and offers a Bentley car service. In case you’re catching on to the pattern, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez also has a three Michelin star restaurant, La Vague d’Or.

The resort is open seasonally, generally from mid-May through mid-October.

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez

Cheval Blanc Seychelles

Cheval Blanc Seychelles is a 52-room resort, and is the brand’s first property in Africa. The Seychelles is known for its beautiful beaches and ocean, and the resort is nestled on Mahe’s Anse Intendance beach. From relaxation, to fine dining, to a destination spa, this resort has it all.

The resort is open year-round, and is the newest addition to the collection.

What’s the best way to book Cheval Blanc properties?

Like most luxury hotel groups, Cheval Blanc doesn’t really discount much, and tries to maintain pricing integrity between booking channels. Generally speaking the price you see on Cheval Blanc’s website is the price you’ll pay no matter where you book. However, there is a trick to getting a better value at these hotels.

If you book Cheval Blanc hotels through a Virtuoso travel advisor then you’ll receive extra benefits for your stay without paying extra. The rate through a Virtuoso travel advisor will be the same as you see directly online, but with the benefit of value-add perks like breakfast, a room upgrade, a hotel credit, and more.

Virtuoso rates are generally combinable with promotions being offered directly by Cheval Blanc, so in most cases you should be able to stack them (for example, Cheval Blanc Maldives has a stay seven, pay five promotion). Furthermore, while Cheval Blanc properties belong to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, the perks are generally richer through Virtuoso.

Ford is an expert on Cheval Blanc properties, and is more than happy to help with Virtuoso bookings, and can be reached at [email protected]. Below I’ll summarize the Virtuoso perks you can expect to receive at each Cheval Blanc property, in addition to standard inclusions.
