Marriott Ambassador Elite Experience: What Does Top Tier $23K Status Get You?
About a year ago, I shared how I earned Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador status, which is the program’s top tier elite status. I actually had the status pre-pandemic for several years (dating back to the Starwood Preferred Guest days), though given how Marriott Bonvoy has evolved, I was curious to see what the experience is like…

Had a fairly high success rate with Y24 when I was ambassador years ago. I think I got it almost every single time but all the properties were in Asia. I never used them for early check in before most of the mainstream properties usually check you in as early as 10-11am in many places around Europe and Asia as long as rooms are available. Y24 on the other rate for late checkout, like arriving at 2am and the room being available to you till 2am next day, that’s where it had the best value
When I had Ambassador status, a particular hotel I stayed in like 150 nights/year for work always insisted on dropping a bottle of wine in my room weekly upon check-in. I literally never opened it because I was only there to sleep and didn’t have a check bag to take it home in. All the same, nice gesture. Was a lovely hotel and I also became friends with the staff, which helped.
Ahahaha reminds me of my stay during my ambassador period at the then Courtyard by Marriott near Tverskaya Moscow (center). I literally had a bottle of wine (full size) and a bowl of fruits and macaron placed outside my door every afternoon. It got to the point that at the end of my month look stay, I had over 15 wine bottles in my wardrobe that I only drank once. I found a clever use for them though. Started using them as gifts to my friends in Moscow on my last few days. Even delivered 7 bottles at once to a particular friend who was shocked
Also learned a fun fact. During my entire month of stay, I was the only ambassador at the property so it came without saying having me was pretty much a very uncommon experience for them, hence this bizarre offering of trying to make me into an alcoholic
I've been an ambassador for 7 years. I legitimately re-qualified during every year of the pandemic even when most weren't traveling and had one or two years of courtesy extensions.
My biggest issues are too properties are lazy and don't care. Part of being an ambassador is answering extensive questions on F&B preferences. Presumably, those preferences are supposed to inform hotels about what you might like if they provided a F&B amenity.
I'd estimate 90% of properties that provide me a F&B amenity provide me something specifically listed as something I can't or don't eat. For example, I'll get a regular Pepsi (or even a Coke) when my profile says I only drink Diet Pepsi/Pepsi Zero. Or I'll get desserts and sweets when my profile says I eat healthy and don't eat junk food, sweets, snacks or any kind of dessert.
Likewise, my only room-specific requests, which are on my ambassador profile and also noted on every reservation, are 100% feather pillows and a room on a high floor. And yet, I'll get a room (not even a suite) on the third of seven floors and the pillows will be 100% foam or the fake feather-polyester blend.
I had been Ambassador for years. Had three different personal ambassadors -- quality varies widely. When one gets to Ambassador, one just wants to be taken care of. And, if the personal ambassador is just "okay," then what's the point? (As Ben noted, the other benefits are marginally incremental.)
I agree on US properties allthought some were more Ok as others but i dont travel there that often.
Total nights this year 155 (rewards/paid).
In most cases I always got a senior suite around the world. With longer stays often if hotel was really full (not suites bookablw as well) they offer from 2nd or 3rd night to change. Often I declined if its just me.
Most often they are visible in the app 2-3 days before already. Always big welcome gifts which I often not use and i often message the hotel upfront in the app that 1 pcs of fruit is enough and not need a full basket.
Your24 I used maybe 4-5 times always OK.
Personal ambassador I use mainly if i need to get in touch with a hotel before I arrive (=german hotels that have way to high heating and turn it off in winter for my room) or for some specific questions like Mulu resort and excursions. And used hem twice to solve issues with a hotel and i mean really wrongdoing. I am quite easy for things that can go wrong. But sometimes ….
PS - One property at which I was a regular routinely granted (modest) upgrades. And, one property granted an unexpected presidential suite upgrade. However, the norm is that a property will resist granting or outright refuse to grant an upgrade even though upgrade-eligible rooms are available (not just in the US). In the end, benefits as a whole became meaningless . . . promises not kept. And, I left.
I have been Ambassador in the past and other than my24 it's of no value. Dedicated agent was changed so often it was a waste of Time.
This year I will have 123 nights and $22k in spend and that's OKAY
Imagine having booked a suite at a luxury property. You have an actual email confirmation that you've booked a suite & your personal ambassador confirms it. But, when double-checking with the hotel the day before, they say you have a standard room (being charged at the suite's price). You provide the confirmation to the manager, who says he's confused. Your personal ambassador then says it's a pricing issue and can't get involved. That's was the final straw for me.
They probably just kept taking and putting back the same bottle of wine knowing you weren’t going to drink it.
You are absolutely right about us based properties ( always with some exceptions)
I found the status is more valued at south Asian countries, especially in India , Japan , Thailand etc
Meanwhile even a Hilton Gold gets a bag of chips and a free water or two at a Spark on a $68 a night stay.
I'm currently being forced to endure a full flag Marriott for 3 weeks. The Fairfield Inn I stayed in for my last Bonvoy stay was nicer, had free breakfast/coffee, free parking, faster Wifi. I'd rather be at the Hampton or Homewood next door....
Oh, and air conditioner guy on Facebook is a psycho.
It is mostly because outside the USA a majority of Marriott's hotels among the full-service and luxury brands are managed by Marriott. In the USA, most hotels are franchised and not managed by Marriott.
I am ambassador and have been for years. I generally get upgrades in the UK and Europe. I have had almost all your 24s honoured. I have had 2 points stays in Aus 5 and 6 nights both with Suite upgrade. I am currently in residence in Asia for 50 nights and have a suite upgrade on a points stay. I used my Ambassador sparingly but know she monitors my travel. I find if I ask for a little it is almost always delivered. Given I stay 200 nights a year it is worth it to me. I would add a number of the hotels I stay at have told me that because I am very regular there I would still get comped. The reality is that I have I have lifetime Titanium. So I can never go very low.
When I see a note addressed "Dear, Schlapping Ben" with three errors in three words, I'm not too impressed. (I even checked to make sure this wasn't a hotel in China where the surname comes first. The hotel was actually in the U.S.)
What a depressing state things are at. people literally stay half their annual life at a hotel or hotel group and are rewarded by an occasional bottle of water or chips… and they rejoice as if it makes it worth while.
In my mind Ambassador status is no great badge… it’s the mark of our most beaten down work travel brethren.
Wednesday is my last day as an Ambassador with 75 nights this year and $16K spending. That's with no effort and many nights paid by clients on direct bill this year where I received no credit for either nights or $$. I try to maintain my status because so many meetings are scheduled for Marriotts and it makes for nice treatment at those meetings but those meetings don't get me any stay credit. Frustrating.
Next year we're taking the kids and grandkids to Hawaii for a week and have a $14K rental... so now I have to think about whether I want to pick up the nights to requalify. My experience has been like Ben's -- lots of cheap amenities and not a lot of upgrades. Also, few hotels pay attention to my special requests. Running joke with my staff was that I had a request for rooms away from the elevator and we'd get off the elevator and my room would be right there.
Even when my ambassador tries -- hotels don't execute. Ambassador said she would make my birthday special - hotel did nothing. Same for my wedding night (we just went on our own, no big wedding in your 50s) - nothing.
Ironically, I have a room tomorrow night at the local courtyard to get my 75th night and my five upgrades... and they upgraded me to a full suite without a cert. One of the best upgrades of the year. At a courtyard...
Decidedly unimpressed.
I have had ambassador Status for the last ten years (I had it also in the SPG days).
I am quite satisfied with my Ambassador Rita. She has helped in correcting a few strange situations that had arisen.
I am also pretty satisfied with the upgrades I obtain and with the general welcome I get. On the other hand, most of my Bonvoy nights are in Europe.
A bag of chips? You are tolerant. I'd give them back as an insult. Which it is.
This was my first year using Marriott BonVoy and I was thoroughly unimpressed!! They do not at all subscribe to the same philosophy as a… Delta SkyMiles system for example. If I travel with other people and book their rooms I only get the points if it is the exact length of stay and I only get credit for nights for one room… regardless. You’d think they would want me to book everyone’s rooms in my company… but no. They make it hard and even undeniably ridiculous to try. Then even though I’m ambassador I tried to cancel three times this year with different non-Marriott hotels days out and they didn’t allow me to. “Sorry, sir.. we must inform you…”. There is no special treatment. Hotels.com treated me better… at least I now if I book on their system I get credited for it. Oh, and the ambassador rep they give you has zero power also and NEVER is proactive. Compare that to Delta 360… of which I am a member of and it is night and day. Delta is proactive and active… they bend over backwards on EVERY situation and I get credit for all my bookings.
I was Ambassador in 25. A few bags of chips and a bottle of water or two as well, with some not even offering that. I did get a couple of upgrades internationaly but I may have gotten those with Titanium. I also had two different Personal Ambassadors this year which seemed to be nice but didn't help with anything as I'm pretty self sufficient. This year 81 nights and $16k recorded, but another 25+ nights and many thousands in spending that never gets counted as "my company" pays. Is Ambassador worth it? Not for me it isn't. It's nice for the thank you at check in and the occasional bag of chips. My Titanium gained over 17 years of 50 to 80 nights is good enough.
I am Ambassador Elite and travel mostly on my own on business, so getting an upgrade to a suite doesn't really hold any interest for me. However, when I am travelling for vacation with my wife, it is always great to have the extra room. Also when we go on Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection every year and my status gives me free laundry for the whole cruise, now that is a great perk.....
I have been part of the Ambassador program since its inception. I am also a Lifetime Titanium. 24 hour benefit, I was unable to request it most of the time as the benefit varies per brand and many do not accept it. Even though my Ambassador contacts the respective hotels, most either do not receive the message or just ignore it concerning my wish for a quiet room. Even my email congratulating me on another year at the Ambassador level, did not address me properly. I emailed Marriott and never received a reply. Lastly, I “polled” many properties front desk and most mentioned that there is almost no difference between Ambassador and Titanium. In 2026, I will most likely reach the dollar amount but not the nights. Marriott needs to have a program with a real differentiation for me to become loyal again.
I think it depends on the type of person you are whether you value it. There’s nothing I want more than checking into a hotel and finding a bag of chips and a Coke Zero waiting for me, but then again, I’m also someone who thoroughly enjoys Hampton Inn breakfasts.
Well Hampton inn breakfast are class. Nothing better than to not worry about breakfast being included in your package. Just wake up and go to breakfast buffet anytime and load up on as much food as possible, don’t forget to carry some croissants and Gouda slices with you to the room too.
I do not notice anything different. I have been Titanium for 7 years including a one time Ambassador and I very seldom get upgrades. Each property has its own rules. One Westin gives a drink voucher per day another provides one for each stay regardless of the number of nights you are staying. The Westin in Las Vegas allowed use of the sauna at no charge while the Westin in Hilton Head charged $20. It’s very confusing that the rules are different per property even if it’s the same name brand. Why do titanium and Ambassadors need to pay for Resort fees or parking which total around $60? If I have spent 75-100 nights in a hotel in one year at $275-$400 a night I think the extra fees should be waived. I have reduced my Marriott Bonvoy stays and switched to Hilton hotels for reduced fees and better offers
I was fortunate to earn ambassador status the year both my kids got married. My son was married at the st Regis in dc on nye and I received 2 gorgeous suites. My daughter was married in England and the jw groversnor provided a beautiful suite. Back to titanium for life, but my one year of ambassadors magical. Was it the weddings, Marriott or both?!
You go to “Facebook Groups?”
The most childish low class thing I’ve ever heard!
As I travel I find that reward members spend a lot of time earning the elite tiers at lower hotels then get upset when they can’t get free upgrades at the resort hotels or high end hotels. Guess what, most of the hotel is occupied by elite guests already and hotels have a finite number of rooms. I hear far too many guests complain “ I’m titanium, I guess that doesn’t mean anything” to the front desk. How about you book the room that you really want and hope something better is available? Far too many people have this entitlement attitude and it disgusts me. I find greater satisfaction with my stay when I book what I really want, and when you’re giving the front desk a good attitude they generally go out of their way to do more for you.
