Bali is one of those crappy airports that I actually like, at least airside. At first it's rather frustrating. When you enter the airport you first have to show your ticket as they screen all your bags. Each passenger goes through a metal detector, including taking off shoes, belts, etc. Not sure what purpose that…

A couple of questions:
1. In these kinds of F cabins, do 2 people traveling together normally take the 2 seats positioned together in the middle, or is it too difficult to talk to each other if each person takes a window seat?
2. Also, for Hong Kong, is there normally a departure tax? I have an award booked through US, and they were not sure if this was included in the taxes that are already paid. (I am wondering if I need to save HKD currency for the departure.)

While most 747 first class cabins have two seats in the middle, Cathay only has a single middle seat. As a result the first row is ideal since you can kind of lean forward and talk to each other, but it's still tough. That's the nice thing about being able to dine together, though. So I just usually end up picking two window seats across from each other and dining together. There's no departure/arrival tax in Hong Kong. One of the easiest airports as far as immigration goes, in my opinion.
You went to Sha Tin for your overnight layover? There are far better places for a layover... I know there's a Hyatt Regency in Sha Tin and it's pretty new, but the Hyatt Regency in TST is even newer?
Actually, contrary to you lucky, there is a departure tax (HK$120 [US$15], included in the "taxes" part of the airline ticket). David, you won't need to pay at the airport.
There's no arrival tax though.
