New Amex Offer For InterContinental Stays

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points.

Lately we’ve seen several good Amex Offers for hotel stays, including for stays at select Hilton brands, Marriotts, Ritz-Carltons, Crowne Plazas, and more. Now there’s a new Amex Offer for yet another IHG brand.

With this new, targeted Amex Offer, you can earn $100 back or receive 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend $500+ at InterContinentals in the US by November 30, 2018.

Personally I value Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents each, so the 10,000 bonus point offer is better than the $100 offer, since I value 10,000 points at $170.

It’s interesting to see this offer from Amex, especially since IHG’s co-branded credit card, the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, is issued by Chase.

All eligible room rates and room charges should qualify towards this offer, including taxes and other fees. It would appear as if you could use this even for a stay after the deadline, as long as your room is charged prior to the deadline (so if that’s the case you’d want to book a pre-paid rate — just make sure the hotel actually charges you at the time you book, because sometimes hotels don’t charge you right away for pre-paid rates). You don’t have to spend the entire $500 in one transaction, but rather multiple transactions should qualify.

This promotion is targeted, though seems to be available on many cards earning Membership Rewards points. For example, on my account, I see the offer on The Platinum Card® from American Express. Don’t expect to see this offer on any co-brand Hilton or Starwood Cards.

Personally I value 10,000 Membership Rewards points at $170, so when you combine that with the promotion IHG is launching shortly, you’re potentially looking at a very nice return on your InterContinental spend.

Was your account targeted for this promotion, and will this cause you to stay at an InterContinental?

  1. Not surprising. AMEX is challenging Chase on the business front. Very smart and decisive move by AE. Good for American Express and good for customers.

  2. The only thing that really sucks is all the offers I’ve seen so far for hotel stays are in the USA or US territories. Why not make the stays eligible for the offer anywhere in the world?

  3. I’ve got a bunch of live IHG offers on my cards including this one, the Kimpton spend $300 get $60 back, and Crowne Plaza ones for spend $250, get 5,000 points, and spend $250, get $50 back. As someone whose primary hotel program is IHG, I’m hoping this is the start of a long trend.

  4. It’s making it hard for me to meet minimum spends on other cards, because I’m trying to max out these AMEX offers.

  5. I got offer of spend $500 get $100 back. I would love MR points instead of that, but that’s not a bad deal too.

  6. I’ve got a stay in NYC this weekend at the Haytt to meet spend on their card. I’ve been wanting to try to the IC Barclays for awhile. Sigh!

  7. I opened my first AmEx card this past May, and I have yet to receive an offer for MR points. Everything has been cash. How does one get point offers? Is it random, or is there something to it??

  8. Does InterContinental sell gift cards directly? Would I be able to purchase a $500 gift card for a future stay to trigger the offer?

  9. I would have taken advantage of the Crowne Plaza offer, but my stay will be in London, so bonus does not apply. AMEX will still get my spend on the trip, though, as I will stay at Hilton and pay with my AMEX Hilton Aspire

  10. Do you know if thisboffer would qualify with any IHG-brand hotels? I have a week coming up in a Staybridge Suites that it would be awesome to use this on!
