Trump “Decertifies” All Planes Produced In Canada: How Is This Even Real?!?

Trump “Decertifies” All Planes Produced In Canada: How Is This Even Real?!?

81

President Trump has seemingly banned all aircraft produced in Canada from the United States… okay then.

Trump bans Bombardier aircraft on Truth Social

I’ll let Trump’s Truth Social post speak for itself:

Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets, one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made, we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified, as it should have been many years ago. Further, Canada is effectively prohibiting the sale of Gulfstream products in Canada through this very same certification process. If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

DONALD J. TRUMP
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

What am I even supposed to say about this?

So if this is to be believed, then all CRJ-200s, CRJ-700s, and CRJ-900s, have just been “decertified.” Honestly, “truth” is stranger than fiction nowadays, and what can I really say here? I love the concept of instantly applying laws, and communicating them via Truth Social.

How serious is all of this? I mean, a few weeks back, Trump claimed he was capping credit card interest rates at 10%, and that any company not following this rule would be “in violation of the law.” Well, the major credit card companies still have interest rates of over 10%, so…

Like, does anyone find this behavior to be normal? I respect if you agree with his underlying policy ideas, but could he at least follow through on what he says, and implement these laws, rather than random Truth Social posts that make absurd claims? Or is this where we’re supposed to say “OMG, he’s such a good negotiator?”

I guess this aircraft is no longer certified!

Bottom line

President Trump claims he has just “decertified” all aircraft produced in Canada. So if that’s to be taken at face value, then expect mass cancelations tomorrow for American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express. Even though this is passed off as fact and law, I’d take this as seriously as Trump’s 10% credit card interest promise…

    What is a "Canadian engine"?
Final assembly in a plant located in Canada?
Parts and component subassemblies manufactured in Canada from worldwide parts?
All parts, subassemblies and final assembly all done in a building located in Canada (no such thing)?

If I was Canada, I woud take my time to certify as well. Given the FAA waved through some doozies in the USA without properly checking (737 Max anyone?), I wouldn’t be putting a lot of trust in any FAA certification, and would want to investigate from the ground up. Which takes a lot of time. Interesting point re Canadian engines though…hee hee

And the certification of MAX aircrafts are going well??

Wouldn't dare step foot in one, telling all family members the same if they want to arrive at their next destination.

Right, because at least 0.00000000001% of flights by MAX aircrafts have incidents.

Free idea to the entrepreneurs here. In 2029, create a "Trump Boner of the Day" calendar. For 29 Jan 2029, it will read, "on this day in 2026 Trump 'decertified' all Candian-made jets."

    So, a few things:
    1) he can't decertify aircraft
    2) it IS true that Canada withheld certification of newer Gulfstreams, which means that they cannot be registered or operated in Canada. Thus....benefitting....Bombardier. Funny that....kinda trade barrier
    3) as usual, Trump is right on identifying the problem. perhaps the noise this generates could get the Canucks' attention.

On your #2: I have no expertise in this area, but I do wonder: are we sure certification was "witheld" as you said, or is it also possible that Canada's certification process is, like most GovCan processes, embarrassingly slow?

On your #3: "right on identifying the problem" is only true if it's been established that the certification was "witheld", not just stupid slow bureaucracy. Are other aircraft certified more quickly? "Witheld" has a specific meaning....

    No.

POTUS cannot decertify aircraft by social media post. That's not how laws work.

Aircraft certification is controlled by the FAA under federal statute. It requires formal rulemaking, technical standards, safety justification, and compliance with bilateral aviation agreements. You can't revoke certifications because you're cross with Canada about Gulfstreams.

This is either an empty threat (TACO!) or constitutional illiteracy dressed up as dealmaking. The FAA hasn't grounded these planes. Airlines are still flying them. Nothing...

Canada has NOT certified the newer G600, G700, or G800. While inefficient compared to the US and Europe, this is not illegal. Also, G700 only recently received FAA certification (it was delayed repeatedly from an original 2022 target), and the G800 received U.S. certification in May 2025. Countries often certify aircraft on different timelines.

Another day, another moment of POTUS pretend governing by temper tantrum, packaged as strength for people who mistake noise for action.

Funny how some people rejoice at the prospect of new US carrier service to Venezuela orchestrated by the same person that is messing with Canada.

Alberta separationists have met with the US.

This is about Trump making Canada the 51st state one province at a time.

Aviation ALWAYS is a microcosm of the larger world.

    6. Tim Dunn Diamond

let's see how far AC and WS' networks work w/ no support from Boeing.

In case you can't figure it out, Canada is a much smaller economy than the US and a large part of its wealth comes from oil which has no value if it is not exported to the US for processing.

Whether you grasp it or not, Trump picks battles he can win and Canada is in no position to acting like it is going to win.

this isn't about politics but pure reality.

Your theory collapses on contact with facts.

Venezuela flights: AA's Caracas resumption follows standard DOT procedures, not presidential whim. Route applications were filed months ago under bilateral air agreements.

"51st state" fantasy: Alberta separatism polls at 25-30% provincially with zero constitutional mechanism for secession or U.S. annexation. Fringe movements aren't geostrategy.

China criticism: The U.S. conducts $575 billion in annual trade with China. Attacking Canada for Chinese engagement while maintaining massive bilateral trade is incoherent.

The rest of the neighborhood distances themselves.

    2. All Due Respect (OG) Guest

Respect isn't generated by threatening to ground regional jets over certification timelines. That's not "playing hardball." That's mistaking chaos for strength.

The data shows the opposite of what Samuel claims is happening:

      U.S. global standing in 2025:
      - RepCore Nations: dropped 18 positions (30th to 48th)
      - Canadian favorability: collapsed 33 points (52% to 19%)
      - G7 positive perception: down 13 points (59% to 46%)
      - Classification: "weak" reputation category

      What respect requires:
      - Predictable governance, treaty adherence, technical competence, alliance management. None of these are demonstrated by threatening aircraft decertification via social media without legal mechanism.

      What Donny/Stephen's action produces:
      - Allies hedging against U.S. reliability. Trading partners seeking alternative arrangements. International institutions functioning around American absence rather than with American leadership.

Belligerence is not authority. Countries aren't respecting the U.S. more. They're managing The US as an unstable actor, like dealing with coked out ape with a machete and handgun. That's the opposite of restored standing.
