Redeem Miles For Flagship Lounge, Flagship First Dining

Note: While I first wrote about this a few days ago, I wanted to provide an update. Redeeming miles for Flagship First Dining is actually a much better deal than I first assumed, since each pass is valid for up to three people. I updated the below post to reflect that.

For quite some time, it has been possible to redeem American AAdvantage miles for Flagship Lounge access. The airline has now rolled out an interesting new opportunity, giving select members the ability to redeem miles for Flagship First Dining.

I wanted to go over the details of this new redemption option, though for context, let’s also cover the option for Flagship Lounge access (since Flagship First Dining also gives you Flagship Lounge access).

Redeem American miles for Flagship Lounge access

Flagship Lounges are American’s premium international lounges, which are a step up from Admirals Clubs. If you’re not otherwise eligible for access, travelers are able to pay $150 or redeem 15,000 AAdvantage miles for access to a Flagship Lounge.

These single visit passes are valid for same-day, one-time use, at the Flagship Lounge location at which access is purchased. You must be flying American or a oneworld partner airline the same day to purchase such a pass, though it doesn’t matter what cabin you’re traveling in, or what route you’re flying on.

Keep in mind that for some people, a “status for a day” purchase could be a better value, given that AAdvantage Platinum members and above get Flagship Lounge access on eligible international itineraries.

Is buying Flagship Lounge access worth it? I think the price is rather steep, though I’ll say three things:

  • If you have a very long layover, it could represent a decent value, especially if you want a shower, you’re looking to eat, you want a few drinks, etc. (it would have to be a really long layover, though)
  • Admirals Club access costs $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles, and I’d say that in many situations, I think the premium for Flagship Lounge access is worth it
  • Sometimes people just want to splurge on special trips even if it’s not a great value, and that’s totally fair; sometimes that’s the fun of miles

Redeem American miles for Flagship First Dining

Flagship First Dining is American’s most premium lounge setup, as these are located within select Flagship Lounges, in Dallas (DFW) and Miami (MIA). These exclusive spaces offer a la carte dining, with a pretty solid selection of food and drinks, and in some cases, some really premium champagne.

Historically these lounges have been intended for “premium” first class passengers, though American is in the process of eliminating premium first class, which raises the question of what the future holds for these spaces.

American has rolled out a new way for travelers to access Flagship First Dining (we first learned in early 2024 that this option would be coming). Specifically, AAdvantage Platinum Pro members and above who have already earned the status for the year (meaning they’ve passed 125,000 Loyalty Points for the year) can redeem for Flagship First Dining passes.

This feature is available under the “Enhance with Miles” section in the “Rewards Hub,” where members will also see relevant details, including how many times the redemption is available, the total mileage cost, and the expiration date of these vouchers. There’s no option to pay cash for this access, as it’s exclusively for redemptions.

It’s my understanding that:

  • You can redeem for two passes when you earn Platinum Pro status, at the rate of 24,000 miles per pass
  • You can redeem for two passes when you earn Executive Platinum status, at the cost of 20,000 miles per pass

You must be flying American or a oneworld partner airline the same day to purchase such a pass, though it doesn’t matter what cabin you’re traveling in, or what route you’re flying on. What makes this especially awesome is that each pass is valid not only for the person who purchased it, but also for up to two guests, so each pass is valid for up to three people visiting together.

For what it’s worth, this isn’t available at the Chelsea Lounge New York (JFK), which is a joint venture with British Airways.

Is buying Flagship First Dining access worth it? I’ve gotta say, I actually think it’s a pretty solid value, especially if you’re traveling with two others. As a party of three, it’s like redeeming ~6,700 miles per person for this experience:

  • Since Flagship First Dining is located inside Flagship Lounges, redeeming for this pass also includes Flagship Lounge access
  • This is a much better value than redeeming for Flagship Lounge access, which only gives one person access at the cost of 15,000 miles

If you want to splurge and have a special trip, then I could totally see justifying this experience. I’m happy to see American has chosen to make this experience represent a decent value, as it’s a good way for American to get some value out of this space, especially with first class eventually disappearing.

Bottom line

For a long time, it has been possible to redeem American AAdvantage miles or pay cash for Flagship Lounge access. It’s also now possible for high tier elite members to redeem miles for Flagship First Dining, which is an interesting new opportunity. For 20,000 to 24,000 miles, you can buy a pass that gets up to three people into Flagship First Dining, as well as the Flagship Lounge. That could represent a solid value.

What do you make of the ability to redeem AAdvantage miles for Flagship Lounge and Flagship First Dining access?

I read the terms of the Flagship First Dining pass and saw this:

"A Flagship® First Dining pass provides access to the holder and their immediate family (spouse, domestic partner and / or children under 18) or up to two guests. Children 2 and older count as a guest."

For 24,000 miles if you are family of 4 or more it could be decent value.

I rather like the Flagship Lounge at DFW, but 150 dollars or 15,000 miles is ridiculous. Who do they think they are, Emirates?

Other airlines don’t charge for their meals in the lounges

You don't travel much do you?
There are more airlines than Spirit, Frontier, or Southwest.

24k for me, 2 available. I have 126k LP right now. This could cover three one way flights to the Caribbean! ...but I haven't gotten any aspirational redemptions with my AA miles recently with how competitive oneworld awards have been, so maybe I'll end up doing this someday. Frustrating you can't do this for Chelsea though, since I'm based in NYC

Please don't make me waste even more time at the airport, but give me better food and wine options on board instead of the swill you serve.

AA: do you realize you're in the TRANSPORTATION business? Make that part better and focus on making travel much more EFFICIENT and enjoyable instead of wasting time to (try to) compete against restaurants and selling meals on the ground.

Please don't make me do nothing at the airport, but give me better food and wine options during the entire trip instead of the swill you serve on board.

AA: do you realize your premium cabins are in the HOSPITALITY business? Make that part better and focus on making travel much more EXPERIENTIAL and enjoyable instead of wasting time to (try to) compete against FedEx and quickly getting to a point on the ground.

Jake could FedEx himself overnight in a flat rate box. Let the rest of us enjoy the lounges.

AA has a FFD room at LAX. AA has failed to reopen it. It just sits there. For four years, it's been reopening soon. And, those who are traveling in Flagship First are stiffed.

"If you have a very long layover, it could represent a decent value"

Just curious, but how long does the layover have to be in order to justify paying the amount to enter? 3 hours or more? 5 hours or more?

The Flagship lounges used to be good, now they are horrible. Its the same food that only changes every 6 months? So if youre a loyal travel going abroad, you would be eating the same 3 buffet dishes. Horrible and not worth it. Capital one or Chase lounges are better.
Now, flagship dining is better but at the same time, id rather spend $200 and have a nice meal at a restaurant rather than using flagship first dining.

For me it’s 20k miles up to 4 times.

Platinum Pro, already passed 125k lps, offer is 24k miles with 2 available. That's often times enough for a domestic or Mexico roundtrip ticket, so this is a very bad value to me.

If I was a little less conservative with my tree planting donation, maybe it would be a consideration.

Unless one is expecting to down ridiculous amount of cheap alcohol like college kids, you're better off spending $150-200 at a restaurant.

Now if you can top off your Flagship Lounge access with the Dining for $50, that would be something to consider.
