Hermès Birkin with millions of dollars of jewels stolen at airport
This incident happened on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Specifically, a Russian family was queuing at the Emirates check-in counter, and a member of the group had a Louis Vuitton suitcase with an Hermès Birkin bag placed on top of it. I guess they weren’t paying close attention, because two thieves managed to steal it without initially being detected.
Well, the thieves hit the jackpot, as the total value of the belongings was believed to be around €8.5 million. This included an Hermès Birkin encrusted in gold and diamonds, a €4.5 million diamond ring, an €800K BVLGARI watch, a €750K Chanel brooch, €500K diamond earrings, a €250K Tiffany diamond bracelet, a €100K Versace diamond choker, a €45K Chopard watch, €10K in cash, and more.
I mean, WOW. On the one hand, you’d think that you’d guard a bag like this with your life if you’re in public with it. On the other hand, I guess if you’re casually walking around with an €8.5 million bag, then that’s not actually that much money to you. For that matter, perhaps these people were a bit new to flying commercial? Since they were Russian and traveling from the European Union, I imagine a private jet direct to Russia wasn’t an option, hence connecting through Dubai.
There’s no indication that the group traveling with the luggage somehow had nefarious intentions, or that this was intended to be an insurance scam, or something. Rather these just seemed to be very rich Russians.
How police caught the two thieves
While the thieves got really lucky with the bag they decided to steal, unfortunately for them, they got caught pretty quickly. Airport police managed to follow the movements of the thieves through the airport. They ended up going to the rental car center, and leaving in a rented car.
Information about the car was then shared with police outside the airport. The pair drove to Girona, and then police managed to locate the vehicle and arrest the thieves within two hours. The bag and its contents were recovered.
I can’t help but wonder if the thieves truly just randomly targeted these people based on their expensive luggage, or if the Emirates passenger had been followed for longer than that, with the thieves knowing just how many valuables the passengers had on them. You’d think that trying to steal in an airport terminal would be risky, given the number of people and cameras, but I guess that didn’t deter these people.
This is a good reminder to always keep a close eye on your belongings at the airport. Many people assume that you’re safe once you get inside the airport terminal, and that because of how crowded airports are, you’re unlikely to have stuff stolen from you. As you can tell, obviously that’s not the case.
Bottom line
Two thieves got really luck when they managed to steal a bag from someone at an Emirates check-in counter at Barcelona Airport. Not only weren’t they initially detected, but they must have stolen one of the most expensive bags ever to be at an airport.
Unfortunately their luck ran out when security camera footage revealed the car in which the thieves drove away, allowing police to track them down.

The obvious takeaway here is this: if you steal a bag at an airport, DON'T rent a car; catch a bus, jump off after two stops, catch another and so on until you're free and clear...but...good luck trying to fence a haul like that!

Had to be Barcelona... The one place in Europe where I had my phone stolen, and everyone seems to come back from there with some petty crime story. I know these things happen all over the world, but it really seems out of control in BCN. Also several reports of people being targeted coming off the Mallorca to BCN ferry. Such a shame as it's a great city.

The same thing happened to me at the Air France Premier check-in at El Prat Barcelona in 2017, albeit the damages were under 5 figures. The police did not even budge in that specific instance. They asked if I had insurance, gave me a police report for making my claim and sent me on my way. Though I did miss my flight and Air France was kind enough to make all the required changes and provided me with a nice hotel for the night.

Totally trust airport security? Nope. Heard so many stories about stolen items from handcarry going through security point. Beware! I had a client whose passport was picked while in line for check in at OHare. What a nightmare! Had to go and get an emergency passport while her husband left on the cruise and she joined him later missing part of her cruise.

I was station manager for an airline in BCN and this airport is a hot spot for theifs. They target certain nationalities such as Russians, Chinese and Iranians who generally carry a lot of cash and also couples with small children who don't pay attention to their belongings since they are preoccupied with kids. We had suggested so many time to police to limit terminal access to ticket holders to no avail. Problem is getting worst and not better.

They were lucky not to be in Copenhagen airport, we recently had our backpack & passports stolen, no security present, totally indifferent police. They refused to believe us when we showed them the location of our bag which was still in the airport, from our air tag. Errrrrrr, no. I assume I'm safe because of the high levels of security and a significant proportion of the people there are actively ID'd. Assuming you're safe from theft because it's crowded seems absurd - the more crowded an area is, the easier it is for things to get stolen.

Yes, we just returned from the UAE, and the number of fat, happy Russians blissfully vacationing while their country murders innocent European civilians was truly disgusting. A horrible, corrupt, arrogant, backwards, ugly culture that must suffer the consequences of their actions.

Ben, as far as I know under EU sanctions a private jet is not an option for Russian clients to any destination, not just direct to Russia. Sanctions also ban any direct flights to Russia, private or commercial.
So the only decent airlines that still fly to Russia are TK and the ME3. Would be interesting to see if US/EU could expand sanctions by making the airlines choose between Russian and US/EU airspace. These airlines...

Recently, in US cities where police are discouraged and there's a strong defund the police movement, crime is not investigated except for maybe murder. Theft is met with "file a report online" and "Submit the report to your insurance company, if any". Burglary with video, who cares. I do not watch Fox News. I have called the police. In one case, they came after 14 hours for burglary. In another case, they said to just file a report online.

Given the restrictions on Russian banking and travel from the EU to Russia, it’s not that hard to believe.
Expensive jewelry can be used to port around assets and liquidate at destination without having to use the banking systems as much. Sort of like expensive art work, but more portable and easier to use to buy off people to “look the other way”.
Less than €30k of that €8-9 million estimated value of the stolen bag was cash. The rest of the value was in non-cash goods.
I am on friendly terms with a few billionaires, and some of them do get in lines and wait for agents at airports to get checked-in for commercially scheduled common carrier flights from time to time. They aren’t always flying on private jets all the time out of crowd-free airports.
