JetBlue reveals first new livery since launch
JetBlue has just unveiled a new livery, which is the first time in the carrier’s 23-year history that we’ve seen a complete design refresh. The new livery is, unsurprisingly, very blue.
The carrier’s first aircraft to feature this new livery will be entering commercial service as of June 15, 2023. It’s an existing five-year-old Airbus A321 with the registration code N982JB. The plane has been in Macon, Georgia (MCN) for the past couple of weeks, where it had this work done.
The new livery design builds on JetBlue’s previous design. Here’s how JetBlue describes the highlights of the new livery:
- A blue fuselage that goes all-in on the company’s namesake color
- Iconic tailfin patterns now energized and extended to embrace the body and belly of the aircraft
- A larger JetBlue logo to represent the bold impact these aircraft have in the industry
- Colorful winglets that add an extra pop of fun with a refreshed palette of accent colors
- The aircraft’s pattern and the JetBlue logo featured on the belly, making it instantly recognizable to plane-spotters
Later this year, customers can look forward to spotting more new livery designs with refreshed tailfin patterns. So while the main part of the livery will be standardized, JetBlue has long had some variations of the tail designs.
Earlier in 2023, JetBlue rolled out a new visual brand identity on digital assets and social platforms, intended to “reflect a more joyful, contemporary and digital-first appearance.” This new livery is an extension of that.
Here’s how Jayne O’Brien, head of marketing and loyalty at JetBlue, describes this new livery:
“Liveries have always been a part of our identity. When you spot a JetBlue aircraft—whether on the ground or in the air—we want customers to recognize us as a travel brand that moves them differently than everyone else. The new livery helps us stand out among a sky of legacy carriers, and is a stunning reflection of our role as a disruptor that uniquely combines lower fares and great service.”
My take on JetBlue’s new livery
Us avgeeks tend to have strong opinions on new liveries. Even if we eventually end up liking a new design, it can often take some getting used to. With that in mind, what’s my take on JetBlue’s new livery? I’m not sure I have a strong opinion yet.
As a reminder, below is what JetBlue’s current livery looks like, though there are some variations with the tail design. If you ask me, JetBlue’s previous livery still looks pretty modern. And while the fuselage is white (as is the case with most airlines), it still has some unique elements that set it apart.
By comparison, the new livery definitely stands out a lot more. When I first saw it, I really liked it, though as I look at it a bit more, I’m less sure. I find some of the color combinations to be a bit weird. It also almost looks like a cross between the Breeze and Southwest liveries.
Or alternatively, it’s almost like JetBlue already wanted to integrate Spirit into its new livery, just using JetBlue’s colors, rather than Spirit’s.
Bottom line
JetBlue has unveiled a new livery, which represents the first full livery refresh in the carrier’s history. JetBlue has long used blue as its signature color, and the new livery most definitely reflects that. There’s no denying that the new livery will stand out at airports, though it will take some getting used to.

Appreciate it isn't boring Eurowhite like everyone else which is what they had, but also looks very dated and not very modern

I now am really disappointed that the NEA has been dissolved -- not for myself, but for Pepsico. They could've used shared terminals as free ad materials, billboards, etc.

B. For blue. I do like how the blue fuselage and white titles will make JetBlue stand out from its peers in a way that their current livery doesn’t do enough. I have mixed feelings about the Mint leaf pattern. On one hand, the pattern looks pretty elegant and distinctive, but on the other hand, something about it sort of feels off, like it doesn’t really belong on a plane. It’s the same issue I have with the Etihad branding. The transition between the white leaf pattern and the blue fuselage ahead of it could be smoother. For instance, they could have the mint leaves gradually get smaller, darker, or further apart going forward from the back. On a side note, it would be cool if JetBlue had an actual logo instead of it just being the wordmark “jetBlue”.
Not convinced. Also what it is with all airlines lately making their names as huge as possible on the fuselage? I get you want to stand out but that's in part why you have a livery - rather than just the name? Icelandair, United, Emirates all increasing font size recently to name a few (and add new start up Riyadh with giant lettering... And also blue). Seems B6 are just joining in on others in this trend and the bold blue similar to breeze, SWA etc

Best airline livery ever was one almost nobody got to enjoy. Google TWA's last livery before AA took them over and eliminated them.

I really like it! While I would’ve painted the fuselage a slightly darker shade of blue (this one is a bit too similar to Southwest IMO), I think this is a distinctive and good-looking design that’s very much in line with JetBlue’s branding.
I’m not so sure about the Mint Leaves though. They actually look good on the tail, and they contrast nicely with the dark blue fuselage & white leaves. However, they don’t look...

Overall an 8.5/10 livery. It’s a definite improvement over the old one, if somewhat rough around the edges.

Some Eurowhite are nice and elegant (AF, JL, QF, for instance), but most are dull, I think.

I would be fine with it if only a handful of planes get the new one.
No long term strategy, unresolved operational issues, no NEA, Spirit merger in doubt... so let's address all that by changing our livery?

no pictures of the belly but the fine print says that their name will be on the belly across the fleet.
I don't love the overall look, but it seems clever to have the tail pattern be that "mosaic"-like pattern, provides a neat hook for the branding of their loyalty program (with its tiles and whatnot).
The blue looks awesome! The airline is called JetBlue so totally fits. Now, the tail is horrible. Keep the logo on the rear wing and leave the rest all in blue.

My main gripe with the new livery is the new "mint" color. Previously Mint was branded with a nice green like the color of a Mint leaf. Now this new Coral Mint blue is awful, and they even ruined the winglets with this!

Jetblue has lots to work on including improving operational efficiency and IT, and gaining profitability. I think most shareholders would consider this a waste of corporate assets and a distraction.

So does "coming soon to all mint planes" mean this livery is ONLY going onto mint planes to serve as a means of easily identifying them from non-mint ones? Or do they just mean that mint planes are getting it before the rest?
I took it as meaning that tail (and winglet) color will be exclusive to MINT planes.

It's not too late to re-paint this abomination and fire the person who approved this design. It's like Piet Mondrian puked and it landed on the back of jetBlue's fleet.
I like it…striking….it’ll look great in big numbers at their hubs
Too much resemblance to southwest, but i do like the boldness. I did love spirits livery and its nice to see them go for it here just wish the main shade of blue was a little more differnt to southwest's.
