Putting Etihad’s New First Class Pajamas To The Test

33

A few weeks ago I wrote about how Etihad introduced new pajamas in first class and The Residence. In general Etihad has been cost cutting lately, so it’s nice to see them making some improvements to their passenger experience, at least for those in first class.

Etihad has long been involved in the fashion industry (both sponsoring fashion shows and running their own “Runway To Runway” program), and what makes this especially unique is that they’re not just viewing this as pajamas, but rather are suggesting that this is loungewear that guests may want to wear while out and about. The design process here is pretty cool — the designer was picked through a competition that Etihad held last year that was intended to support fashion in the UAE. Specifically, they looked for a local designer to come up with the best concept, and that’s how they ended up with this.

I was somewhat skeptical of the new loungewear. While the clothes looks great on the models they use in the promotions, something tells me they wouldn’t look as good on most of us. I was also curious about the quality.

Etihad reached out to me and asked if they could send me a set of their new loungewear to try. I had no plans to fly Etihad anytime soon, so agreed, since I was curious to see what the quality was like. Etihad sent me a box that seemed to be the same thing they gave out at the launch party for the new loungewear.

Here’s how they describe the “Design Ethos” for the loungewear:

There were two parts to this. First was the regular loungewear, which would be most similar to the old pajamas, and includes pants and a shirt.

The top happened to be monogrammed with my name. I suspect that’s not a normal feature in first class, but perhaps it’s something they do in The Residence.

I asked Ford to model these, because I sure as hell am not about to do that. Here’s the shirt and pants:

That’s only part of the outfit, though. For those in The Residence there’s also a robe.

Here’s what that entire outfit looks like:

I tried them on as well, and Ford and I both came to the same conclusion. These are really, really comfortable pajamas. Like, they might be the most comfortable airline pajamas I’ve ever tried. They’re soft, light, stretchy, and very “breathable,” all of which you want went on a plane. We also thought they were stylish for airline pajamas. I think they may be my favorite airline pajamas I’ve tried. As a point of comparison, I thought Etihad’s old pajamas were pretty bland and I didn’t love the materials either.

All that being said, could I imagine wearing this loungewear in public? No, not really. Well, I mean, I have a bad habit of wearing airline pajamas while out and about, so I guess I’d be no more or less likely to wear these in public. Of course the models they use in the ads look incredible in the clothing, though they’d probably look great wearing anything (or nothing). They don’t represent the average first class passenger. For that matter, I don’t think most of us are so “fashion forward” that we’d feel comfortable wearing robes like these in public.

So yeah, all things considered I have to give Etihad high marks on their new loungewear. They did an incredible job, and used some high quality materials that would be extremely comfortable on a plane, given how light and breathable they are. I could also imagine wearing these in private in a hotel room or wherever. However, personally I view these no differently than any other airline pajamas in terms of not having much of a desire to wear them in public.

So you chose Ford, the guy who could be a model?? We want to see Gary in these rn!!!
lol but for real... i'd wear these in public no problem, no diff from athleisure imo

@John - Thank you very much!
We booked a oneway itinerary from MLE to MNL (via AUH), and since the second and longer flight is operated by a 77W without F Class, we just booked all in Business.
But now I'm seriously considering spending the extra 10.000 AAdvantage miles to upgrade the first segment. Even though it's the older F (A333), I never tried EY's First. And since I love their J, I...

Do we get access to the First Class Lounge in AUH if we upgrade? I know that the connecting flight is in J, but technically it's a First Class ticket...

Damnit i was waiting for a picture of you lucky LOL

Ford has beautiful hair. I remember I used to be obsessed with Hugh Grant’s hair and wish I have hair like his. Ford is as good looking as Shawn Mendes. You should count your blessings. Oh, and back to PJ.... it looks good on him. The robe is reminiscent of Rick Owens designs although obviously at different level of sensibility and finish.

They look better than the last Etihad ones for sure! But also "You're Perfect, You're Beautiful, you look like Linda Evangelista. You're a model. Did you stone those tights?" - Aja ;)

    @lucky

how does it compared to Cathay's first class pyjama ? they have the best in my opinion.

I just finished two EY long hauls in F. On both legs I was given PJ's with a top that had a 1/2 zippered front with a high collar. This looks like a plain t-shirt. How is that and upgrade? Another cost-cut as far as I can tell. Amenity kit was a POC too, similar to AA's business class cheap vinyl kit. However the apartment, food, and service were stellar. I would still fly them.

@Luis - We just flew the MLE-AUH route last month on the A333. They don't automatically hand out the PJs like on their longer routes, but they are definitely available on request. I hate sitting in my street clothes on an airplane - even for a short 5 hour flight - so I asked for the PJs.

Looks nice but as with most of the ME garb, not very practical. EG, what happens when you need to pee? Use a public restroom in Saudi Arabia and the answer becomes obvious : maybe 2 urinals and 20 stalls, as the would-be pee-ers need to be sitzpinklers due to the constraints of the clothes.

Ford kinda has the same look on his face that a dog gets when it's made to wear an ugly sweater. :D

    Seriously though great post!

  11. Mitch Cumstein Gold

Looking good, but remember that nobody can work a pair of flight pajamas like Gary.

  12. Sally Guest

Thanks Lucky. The PJs look good and Ford makes them even look better.

I hope he got something for services rendered for this post ;)

First, thanks Ford for playing the model. You look fine with it. But forget the robe that only works at home! Good news that this Pjs are of good quality and nice to wear. Something EY has not done for a long time..having success on launching sth.
I would have liked to see Ford wearing the robe open to see the difference.

By the way, Ford giving that face or expression, did Lucky tell you to look like that? And Lucky why not try for your readers to pose with the pjs? Insecure much? You do not need to.
Interesting that EY reached to you to evaluate their product. Did you asked them to send one or did EY did on their own?

Hilarious. That’s why I love this blog

While I can't wear them to do my shopping, I really dig my Pye pj's from Cathay Pacific. They sell for over $100 retail and are by far the best pj's I've ever owned.

Also, good job Ford! Try sunglasses next time for that 'devil-may-care' look they have in the promotional photographs!

"Don’t get why you get such hate comments when you post pics of Ford or personal interests."

Er, where and what are all these hate comments? I can't seem to find them...

Hey Ben, some older articles on other sites mention flights from AUH to US are not offering even the purchase of pajamas or amenity kits. Is this still true to your knowledge?

  19. Donna Diamond

They sure look better than any other airline jamies I’ve seen. And they look better on Ford than on the male model.

Why is everyone so negative on Etihad? The cost cutting they have been making is totally insignificant when you put their premium products in comparison with most other airlines (with the notable exception of Qatar Airways, and, arguably Singapore). The 787/380 Studios are fantastic, and are much better than Singapore's bizarre seats with diagonal sleeping positions or Emirates' 777 angle flats on business (there are still many of these on long haul routes).

They are still definitely in the Top 5 airlines, if not the Top 3 - at least in the long haul business class department.

Don’t get why you get such hate comments when you post pics of Ford or personal interests. The reason I follow your blog is because of stuff like that. PS your man is hoooooooot.

  22. Morgan Guest

It would be good if you got them when you were flying with Etihad and also I hope these are the exact ones and they haven't made them better just for you (which probably didn't happen)
Also I am super surprised Etihad even did this as they have been cost cutting like crazy lately so that makes me question just how good these are

  23. W Guest

@Jen-Chou - We would be lucky to see him voluntarily take a selfie and post it, let alone model! ;)

The pajamas look really good, but I prefer Ben’s pictures, really! If Ben can post the pictures of both Ford & Ben wear this pajama together, that even better!

Well, this is travel blog, so probably not going to happen, I shall keep daydreaming!

  25. Desi Guest

Look at Ford out here serving face. Go ahead sir!

  26. Luis Guest

I'm already booked on EY's J from MLE to AUH... I can see award space on F Class, so I'm willing to upgrade if they give pajamas on this route... does anyone know if I might get pajamas?

  27. AdamR Diamond

Maybe post how tall Ford is and what size the pajamas are, that way we have some perspective on how they hang on a person. That said, they still look like PJs to me. But I'll get some here in a few months so I'll be a better judge then.

  28. EricAstray Guest

I remember Etihad sells pajamas in economy class for $35?

  29. Willem Member

Do they give Pajamas on the AUH => LHR route? Don’t have enough AA miles for the others

  30. Tom Guest

Lol I like the pics Lucky!! (seriously)

That’s about 2 dollars worth of cloth
Wear a nice pair of Rhône travel pants and chuck those

  32. cls Guest

They do look better in real life on a real person. But Ford is stunning so he's not representative of real people.
I think you could wear the top or the pants on their own in public but not together. Maybe to the McDonald's drive-through but that's about it.
