Being Upgraded on CX

Hi Lucky!
I like reading your experience flying (I use it as a bench mark).

I recently had a flight from SFO to HKG (Connecting Flight) to MNL on CX.
I am a new Marco Polo Member.

Question are there any criterias in being upgraded from one class to another?
I flew Economy from SFO to HKG and when I got to the boarding gate for the HKG to MNL flight, I got upgraded to Premium Economy (Thanks CX. Wished it was the SFO to HKG ^^ but thank you as well for the upgrade).

Is it just a one-off that CX upgraded me because I was new to Marco Polo or was it something else?

Could have been an operational upgrade where economy was oversold and a MPC member would have priority over a non-member. Other than that, MPC Gold and Diamond members have the ability to earn upgrades which can be applied to flights, with restrictions.
