Which program to join?

    Hi Lucky,

Fantastic blog! I love your trip reports and they inspire me to save my miles and do the same.

I’m looking to fly Austin to Jakarta on American and JAL. Currently I’m not a member of any airline mileage program that is eligible to earn miles on this trip. Which program would you recommend joining and claiming the points on that would provide best value for redeeming long haul premium travel?

    Thanks,

    Andy

@kiwiandy your mileage earnings will depend on the fare class and cabins you book so you’ll have to pay attention and calculate which program works best for you. You may also want to consider which programs you’ll be able to earn additional miles in easily in the future to accumulate enough miles for premium travel. Depending on how long you take to earn redemption rates might look very different from where they are today. I would recommend checking out AAdvantage and Alaska for earnings and go from there.

@Tiffany, I’m curious about something. If I book a flight through AA that has a JAL metal codeshare and put in Alaska as my earning program, will I get a credit for both segments where JAL is not anAlaska partner?
