Surprise tier retention from BA Executive Club

Surprise tier retention from BA Executive Club

    Hi Lucky.

I wonder if you know anything about this.

Before I retired from work at the end of 2017 I was a fairly heavy BA/Oneworld user. As a result, I had Gold Guest List (3,000 tier points p.a.) and Concorde Card Status (5,000 tier points p.a). for at least the last 6/7 years.

Clearly once I left work, my travel decreased substantially over the course of 2018. As a result I wasn’t expecting to keep either GGL or Concorde status when my Exec Club membership was up for renewal this month (March ‘19). Fortunately I had earned enough tier points over many years to have attained “Lifetime Gold” status, so I wasn’t too worried. Ok, Gold is not quite as good as GGL, (which has perks such as an additional card for spouse plus 2 silver cards to other family members) but it’s still pretty nice of BA to retain Gold status for me, so I’ve no complaints.

Sure enough, a couple of weeks ago a Gold card duly arrived in the post. But now here’s the odd bit: today, when I logged in to the BA app on my iphone, and clicked on my account, up popped a virtual membership card, showing that I have GGL status renewed again till March 2020! I wondered if it was a just an app phasing issue, so I logged out and logged in again but it’s still there.

Any idea why this should happen? When I looked up this topic online, I noticed that some people had their previous year’s status retained as a form of compensation from BA for delays due to IT problems. I was one of the “victims” of BA’s recent data leak issue (although I’ve had nothing stolen to date as far as I’m aware) so I wondered if this might be why. But it doesn’t explain why a) I’ve receved no communication about this and b) I received a normal BA Gold card in the post.

Any ideas – I’m reluctant to raise with BA in case they say it’s a mistake and remove it!

    Thanks

It is a mistake obviously. Will be autocorrected soon.

@TonyW61. I actually believe that it was NOT a mistake, but basically an appreciation of you as a long term (profitable) customer. The reason why I am saying this is that I had very similar experiences with Marriott, in the past 10 years at least 4 times the extended my status without me getting even close to the required nights to renew. Similarly, my wife who in 2018 had a Gold status which then was converted into Platinum, her Platinum status was extended until January 31, 2020, even though she only stayed 5 nights at Marriott hotels (she does have a Marriott credit card though). I actually called Marriott to verify the expiration date of her current status – and they did. (I do not think you should call BA though :))).

Sadly KenTexas was right. A few days later it reverted back to simple Gold 🙁
Still, since this is a lifetime gift of gold and I don’t travel nearly as much any more, I should still be very grateful. 🙂
