Last August I made reservations for my family of 4 to fly from IAD to Oslo using United miles. The outbound flight is on Lufthansa and the return flight is on Austrian Airlines this July. One of the tickets is for my newly adopted son who was a foster child at the time that I made the reservation. With the adoption his last name has been changed to have our last name, so all of his documentation (birth certificate and passport) will have his new last name, but the ticket will have his original name.

I spoke with United and they indicated that they can’t change the name since it will cancel the reservation. However, Lufthansa has indicated that they cannot accept him to travel if his passport doesn’t match his passport. We have all of the legal documentation to show the court order indicating the name change, but the Lufthansa agent we spoke to said that won’t do.

Has anyone ever had experience with a name change on an international award ticket with multiple airlines? Also, is there any experience with how to get through security and customs in this situation?
