Flying “Polaris” out of O’hare

Flying “Polaris” out of O’hare

Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question. I am new at this and have been learning a lot from this blog.

I will be flying United from Chicago to Frankfurt in August of 2020. Right now, I could not find any actual Polaris seats on any flight between those two cities. In fact, half of them still have United’s 2-4-2 business class seating. However, I know that United is working on upgrading all of their planes to the Polaris seat. And my flight is not until next August. Is it possible that if I book the flight now, by the time August rolls around the plane I am flying on will have been updated to the new seats? I am guessing the odds are not good but, as I said, I am new to this.

    Thank you for your help.

Are you sure? I only checked a couple of days in August, but the earlier (UA944) of UA’s two flights per day to FRA seems to be on 787-10. I think all of UA’s 787-10s have the actual Polaris seat.

United Polaris- my specialty…. First up, yes all 787-10 have the new seats. Next, I would WAY rather take a 787-8 or 787-9 over the 772 that hasnt been retrofitted yet as you are in a 2-2-2 and not that horrible 2-4-2 joke of a J class. Of course there are some 772’s with 2-2-2- also but the 787 is just a nicer plane. However the only thing is that they are retrofitting the 772’s first so you have a very good shot at your 772 being the new seats. I leave for London tomorrow and went out of my way to get a retrofitted 772 but in the end both flights from SFO are retrofitted. So to be safe go with a 787-8 or 9 over a 772 so you at least have just 2-2-2 but you have a better shot of a 772 being retrofitted over any 787-8 or 9. However, @OCTinPHL says he found 787-10 so that guarantees you the seat you want. FYI though the seat is a little narrower on the 787-10 and noticeably so compared to on the 772 or 77W. Here is a link that United has showing the progress:

Oh and not sure what the general consensus is but the old seats are actually better. I miss them. Of course i love being able to sit alone and that is by far the most important thing for me but the B/E Super Diamond seats on United were my fav. Wish they could have taken that seat and just updated them with some more tech & sophistication. Staggered isnt my fav thing either, way rather have Reverse Herringbone, but we have been through this on other threads 🙂
