AMEX denying “welcome offer” before final submission of application

AMEX denying “welcome offer” before final submission of application

Well, I knew about this, but still was surprised……..
So today I submitted an application for an Amex Hilton Surpass card. FICO over 800.
When I clicked “submit”, a pop up window appeared with: “based on your history of………..you are not eligible for the welcome offer. We have not yet performed a credit check. Would you still like to proceed?”.
Four and three years ago, I had applied for the Delta Gold and Platinum card, respectively, with instant approval. I spent enough on them to get the bonuses, and before the renewal I had cancelled them (affordable award availability was non-existent back then for the route I needed so I did not find the cards useful).
So on one hand I do understand them, and even appreciate that they warned me before proceeding. On the other hand, it is disappointing since I really wanted to use this card.
Does it also mean that for several years now I will not be eligible for the bonus of any Amex cards? Anyone had a similar experience?
ADDENDUM: This morning (after posting the above last night), I called Amex’s reconsideration line just to get a feel for what can be expected going forward. The agent there basically told me that they cannot manually change this, I just have to keep trying in the future hoping that at one point it will go through.

Daniel, I’m totally with you that it’s a frustrating position to be in. But, maybe the card is still worth it for the ongoing benefits? Obviously tough to forgo the welcome bonus, but it may be worthwhile to still get the card?

I have just applied for and got Chase’s IHG card, so for the time being, I am going to use its benefits. I already have Lifetime Titanium status with Marriott.

If you still have another AmEx card I would put some spend on it and then try again. If not, I would get an AmEx card with a minimal sign up bonus that won’t mind foregoing and put spend on it, give it some time and then try applying again. Good luck.
