Upgrading Cathay Biz to First using Alaska points
I currently have a ticket for Cathay Business class for November from Seattle (on Alaska)-Vancouver-HKG (stopover)-SIN, and was redeemed using Alaska Miles.
Should a Cathay First class seat open up for the Vancouver to HKG segment, can I just easily upgrade to that by using more Alaska miles? Any other costs? Or would the whole trip have to be cancelled & ticketed from the beginning?
Also, how many days from departure does Cathay open up First class seats nowadays?
Thanks!
CX generally wont open up F awards until very close to departure – maybe 24-72 hours, slightly earlier if youre lucky.
A call to Alaska will do the trick but there’s also $125 in change fees since its within 60 days of departure. However, There also needs to be award space on the AS SEA-YVR and CX HKG-SIN legs when you call since AS awards are weird in such a way. I’m not 100% sure about SEA-YVR awards but I generally find HKG-SIN J space to be easy, especially since they have multiple flights per day. Just make sure it’s not a Dragonair flight since AS cant get KA awards.
Lastly, also check CX F awards from ORD, SFO and LAX so you have options, and since AS serves those destinations from SEA as well. If you end up connecting in LAX, the QF lounge there is great!
