British Airways Avios

British Airways Avios

Hi all, I stumbled across this deal with BA today and was just wondering what the story is with avios as my head is fried with the setup! – https://www.britishairways.com/travel/fx/public/en_us/cugalias-nc533?source=CUG_nc533&eId=111042&DM1_Channel=AFF&DM1_Campaign=AMER_US_EN_PHG_ALWAYSON&DM1_Site=PHG&utm_source=PHG&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=AMER_US_EN_PHG_ALWAYSON

If I go ahead and book a flight on this with straight cash will I always have the option to upgrade later with avios (and $$ if needed)? Or does the flight have to appear on the reward flight checker as well? I checked, it doesn’t appear with any seats on that flight for the “book with cash and upgrade with avios” option. I always thought avios were more like cash and could just be used to subsidise any upgrade along with cash?

    Thanks !

As long as there is availability, you can still upgrade with Avios when using the AARP discount.

Jonathan, if I remember your past posts, you’re based in the UK, right? Keep in mind that the AARP discount only applies for flights originating in the US, not vice versa.

I’m not sure the prices are up to date but it should help with an understanding of the process.

Hi Ricky, thanks for that. Good to know about the upgrade. There is no reward availability on the flight I’m looking at the minute, I wonder does it be opened up from time to time?

Even worse, I’m based in Ireland! Where it’s next to impossible to get miles for anything! I’m actually going to be originating in the US this time but thanks for the heads up!
