Best use of UR points to get from NYC to Shanghai?

Best use of UR points to get from NYC to Shanghai?

  1. mc47

    Hi,

I’m based in NYC, planning on traveling to Shanghai in March 2017. I want to use my UR points (220k) for a round trip ticket in Business class.

Best I’ve found so far is Korean Air for 125k UR points (with $200 fuel surcharge).

Any suggestions for other transfer partners?

    Thanks OMAAT community!

hi @mc47 and welcome. Try looking at https://www.travelcodex.com/award-search-results/?airport_from=NYC&airport_to=PVG&mode=basic which should show you most of the popular options for that routing as well as transfer partners. KE seems to have a good rate for UR options.

Hi @mc47, and welcome! I would also go with Korean, and would even look at First. It’s a moderate premium all things considered.

If you book KE go for the 747-8 flight if you are in Business or First, the time isn’t amazing but, it is worth it for the better seat

Even better would be ANA which, I’m pretty sure allows for stopovers and has a really good product. The surcharges might be a bit high (not sure) but it is 95k round trip in Business and 180k roundtrip in First, I think you might even be able to get a stopover in Tokyo

Would be a great option along with AS but not a UR transfer partner unfortunately.

But you can transfer URs to United or Singapore and use them on ANA. If flying in business transfer to UA for 70K flights each way. In First transfer to SQ for 100K flights each way.

Fair enough but I was focused on program pricing since it seemed like that’s what the OP was focused on and Hugh was responding to. Agreed that ANA would be a great option product wise!

  9. MidSouthSkier

Good point. But no fuel surcharges on ANA so I guess the question is if the OP would rather save points or dollars. (And, of course, where there is available award space)

Thanks everyone! Great tips from everyone here.

I was very interested in alternative strategies like MidSouth suggested (ie using United/Singapore and then using it on a partner carrier like ANA).

But it’s looking like the most efficient use is probably KE (Korean Air).

Tiffany, I will also look into first class. I’ve taken KE’s business class before, is the first class that much better?
