In case you’re from another planet (and by “another planet” I mean anywhere other than Portland), Portland Airport’s carpet is kind of a big deal.
The carpet at Portland Airport has over 12,000 “likes” on Facebook. Why? Because it’s almost as weird as the city it serves.
Earlier in the year the carpet at Portland Airport was replaced, which was a huge deal for some. Nevermind the fact that it was replaced with a similar green carpet.
If you’ve ever dreamed of having Portland Airport’s fabulous nearly-30 year old carpet in your home, you’re in luck. You can now pre-order your own Portland Airport carpet at mypdxcarpet.com.
So what can you pre-order? For just $39 you can order an 18″ x 30″ piece of carpet, which you can use as a door mat (for an extra $20 you can get one with a “premium bound edge”):
Or you can purchase a set of four coasters for $33 (who wouldn’t want to put nearly 30 year old carpet on top of their table and under their coffee?):
Or for $33 you can purchase “wall art,” aka a piece of carpet to put on your wall:
So, I’m curious, is anyone actually ordering Portland Airport carpet?
Portlanders have a weird obsession with the old airport carpet.
I am kicking myself for not buying the used carpet in bulk super-cheap when I had the chance 1-2 years ago.
I had a friend just return from a visit to Portland, and she seemed to be ok, but...
No placemats to put my flatware on, before putting that same flatware in my mouth? Then I'm out.
Not sure if I'll buy any carpet, but I certainly bought the carpet patterned Timbers scarf! http://shop.timbers.com/tim1091671420.html RCTID!
I didn't even know our carpet was special until my daughter took an "instagram" with her feet. Then I read in the WSJ that our carpet was being replaced and people were all broken up about it. First of all, PDX is a million times better than most other airports. It doesn't STINK (ie. bad odor) like other ones and our "old" carpet looks better than other airports. However, carpet is NOT exciting. If you...

However, carpet is NOT exciting. If you are going to do a mileage run, then come to PDX. You can take a train ride downtown directly from the terminal and you'll get accosted by crazy people, but likely remain unharmed and circle back in time for your next destination. You can charge the $2.50 (or whatever the going rate is) on your CSP and get double points or your Barclay card could make it a free train ride altogether. This is starting to sound like a MMS post now. 10-4
I am such a loser, but yes I have orders in.
Gotta love this hobby where people think that paying $40 for a doormat made from an item that many people have a nostalgic connection to is crazy and absurd, but spending hundreds to thousands of dollars to pick up a new "line" on your "map" or fly on a plane that happens to be an inaugural flight is totally reasonable.
Absolutely buying some pdx carpet. It's a Portland thing. But I'll wait for other sellers to spring up with better prices and more options. Lots of companies have dibs on carpet.
It's a piece of aviation history, however off-the-wall it may be. Price seems too high, otherwise I might bite. My coffee table is in process of becoming a collage of travel themed items under a glass top and a square or two would go nicely.
I see hygiene issues. Are they cleaning the carpet at all before selling it?
I was recently there on a mileage run - got off the plane and was like "Whaaaat - this place needs a renovation"
Here is some additional backstory. Pretty good podcast:

Not buying any 30 years old carpets
On a totally different subject, Norwegian broadcasting corporation is streaming the solar eclipse in LYR live on Friday.
