Redeem American AAdvantage Miles On Oman Air (Finally), A Great Option!

Redeem American AAdvantage Miles On Oman Air (Finally), A Great Option!

13

In June 2025, Oman Air joined the oneworld alliance, which was an exciting addition. One of the big benefits of an airline joining an alliance is supposed to be the introduction of reciprocal award redemptions.

American AAdvantage is the biggest frequent flyer program in the oneworld alliance, and for whatever reason, the program didn’t offer redemptions on Oman Air for over a year after joining. Well, that has finally changed, and it makes for some great redemption opportunities.

Oman Air now bookable with American AAdvantage miles

View from the Wing flags how as of July 30, 2026, American AAdvantage has finally rolled out award redemptions on Oman Air, and they’re bookable directly on aa.com. Oman Air is based in Muscat (MCT), and flies to destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc.

American’s award redemptions rates are excellent, and Oman Air also releases a good amount of award availability. Oman is an interesting country in general, though this can also be useful for connecting itineraries.

For example, you can redeem 40,000 AAdvantage miles to fly Oman Air from Muscat to Southeast Asia, or 42,500 AAdvantage miles to fly Oman Air from Muscat to Europe.

Honestly, with Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways increasingly restricting award availability to partner programs (and releasing less space overall), it’s great to see more AAdvantage redemption options with good availability, as we’re seeing here.

Oman Air has a great onboard product… for the most part

Admittedly the Gulf region is full of high quality airlines, but Oman Air is a special little boutique carrier. The airline has a fleet comprised of Boeing 787s and Boeing 737s.

The 787s have Apex Suites, which I’d consider to be an excellent hard product, despite the 2-2-2 configuration (this product isn’t dense at all, so each passenger has quite a bit of space allocated to them). Oman Air also has a good soft product, and a nice lounge in Muscat.

Oman Air 787 business class

The catch is that as Oman Air has downsized a bit over the years, the airline is increasingly flying its 737s on longer routes, and those planes just have recliner seats in business class. So be careful, because you could fly from Europe to Southeast Asia all the way on a 737, and that’s less than ideal.

But if you can fly the airline regionally on a 737, or long haul on a 787, you should have a nice experience. Oman is also worth a visit, beyond just stopping in Muscat.

Oman is a picturesque country with a lot to offer

Bottom line

American Airlines has just rolled out award redemptions on Oman Air, opening up a great new use of AAdvantage miles. Unfortunately Oman Air doesn’t fly to the United States, but there’s a lot of value here if traveling between the Middle East and Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa, etc.

I’ve enjoyed my flights on Oman Air (well, mostly), and I absolutely plan on redeeming American miles for another flight on the airline at some point. I’m just confused how it took over a year for these redemptions to be added.

What do you make of American rolling out awards on Oman Air?

Just booked a couple of these awards. The downside that I didn’t realize until later… both the LHR-MCT and MCT-KUL flights in business do NOT allow a carry-on. Just a 40kg checked bag. For those of us who do not check bags… what the heck?!

Tell us you've never seen a picture of Oman other than that one, have never been to the desert, and your flying experience is entirely between maga backwaters. Without telling us ;-)

Too late! Oman stopped offering first class. Their business class is but that was a great product!

I wonder how soon Oman Air will start restricting its premium cabin to only its FF members like the other OW carriers do.

Wow . The "picturesque country" photo is really Appealing . As are the perceptions of those who find that place "picturesque" .

Imagine, for a moment, that you've never seen a hot desert or mountainous terrain before. (Like, say you were from the Maldives, ya know, ocean everywhere.) Or, you lived in a bustling city and had never seen wilderness (think, NYC, Shanghai, Tokyo, etc.) Sure, you got him, 'picturesque' is subjective. Next time, maybe, Ben can just let the 'pictures' speak for themselves.

Oman’s natural landscape is pristine but the best part of the country is how locals are friendly and polite.

Ben, I'm grateful that you (and other bloggers like Matthew at LALF) recently safely transited through the Middle East (Dubai, Doha, Saudi Arabia, etc.), but this regional conflict (Iran, etc.) is not 'over.' So, while more options are indeed 'nice,' I'd wait a while before connecting in Muscat.

That said, I think from North America, we'd need to connect at least 2x to get to anywhere using this (like, you say you plan to use this, but have you found actual itineraries from MIA? I don't think so.) Perhaps, it works better for those based in Europe or Asia connecting through ME to elsewhere. But, then again, when you refer to service with that caveat "well, mostly" that isn't very re-assuring. Maybe they've improved since 2024.
