Over the past several weeks, Lufthansa has been introducing a special fleet of planes in a 100th anniversary livery. While the first of these planes entered service several weeks ago, I’m very impressed by how quickly five planes have been repainted.

I’ve gotta hand it to Lufthansa, this is one of the coolest special liveries we’ve ever seen. Not only that, but the livery looks particularly amazing on the 747, if you ask me, and that might just be my favorite “special” plane ever.

Lufthansa highlights crane with 100th anniversary livery

Lufthansa is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year (in 2026), and to mark this special occasion, the airline is introducing a special livery on six aircraft, with each of the most important subfleets getting one plane in a special livery. So far, five of those planes are in service. You’ll find the special livery on the following aircraft:

The expectation is that later this year, Lufthansa will take delivery of a brand new Airbus A350-1000 featuring the special livery, which will round out the centennial fleet.

Lufthansa’s special anniversary livery heavily emphasizes the crane, which is a unique aspect of Lufthansa’s identity since the airline began operations. Here’s how Lufthansa describes this special livery:

The special livery features a blue fuselage with a white crane hovering above it, its wings merging into the wings of the aircraft. The wings of the aircraft thus virtually become the wings of the crane. An unprecedented design that combines movement and elegance, tradition and the future. Designed as a trademark by graphic designer and architect Otto Firle in 1918, the crane has become Lufthansa’s unmistakable distinguishing feature worldwide over the decades.

In addition to the crane, the numerals “100” are integrated on the left side of the fuselage and the lettering “1926 / 2026” on the right side. A “100” logo is also painted on the underside of the aircraft.

Here’s what Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter had to say about the new livery:

“These are the particularly beautiful and unforgettable moments in our job. It’s always a special moment to take delivery of a brand-new aircraft – but today’s landing of this anniversary Boeing 787-9, with its extraordinary special livery marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first ‘Luft Hansa’, was even more exciting and fascinating.”

Now this is what I call a special livery!

Obviously as an aviation geek, I take more interest in aircraft liveries than the average person. I think Lufthansa’s special anniversary livery is really well done. In particular, I love how abstractly yet prominently the crane is integrated into this livery, and how much this is actually an evolution of the carrier’s standard livery (rather than being something completely different).

The heavy use of blue and white reminds me of Delta’s centennial livery A350 that was unveiled a while back. The difference, of course, is that Lufthansa’s standard livery is blue and white, while Delta’s isn’t, so Delta’s special livery was a bit more random, in that sense.

The special Lufthansa livery also reminds me a little of Riyadh Air’s purple livery, since nowadays it’s not often we see liveries that have such heavy use of a tone other than white.

While I think all the planes look good in the special livery, the Boeing 747-8 is in a league of its own. I’d argue it’s the nicest-looking plane under normal circumstances, and this livery really elevates it… what a beautiful beast!

Bottom line

Lufthansa has now rolled out its special 100th anniversary livery on five aircraft. It’s one of the coolest special liveries that we’ve seen from any airline, in my opinion, and emphasizes the crane more than any previous paint job. In particular, the livery on the Boeing 747 is so special.

Now, ideally Lufthansa would be as focused on and as efficient with addressing the interiors of its aircraft, but that’s a different story. 😉

What do you make of Lufthansa’s special centennial livery?

With aviation fuel prices rising exponentially, which airlines will actually survive any long term pain?

I think it looks OK, though definitely not the best special livery we've ever seen. Far from it. I repeat what I said last time you wrote about it; at first glance it looks like someone's started up a new Scottish airline as it resembles the saltire of Scotland as first glance.
Nothing will ever beat the Qantas red Aboriginal Flying art livery on the 747 in the 90s. A work of art in every sense.

I wish there was some yellow.

I think you should consider why most airlines are primarily white or use a lot of white in their livery.

  5. justindev Guest

I agree the B748 in the LH special livery is gorgeous.

  6. justindev Guest

LH's livery has grown on me. Would love to see it on the A350

DL's rather meh. Perhaps it needs some reds, but it seems so after thoughtish... so something is missing ish...

Sigh...if only Lufty could be keen and enthusiastic about delivering on the things that matter, instead of....paint. Now what's the latest timeline on those seats again?? BTW: the special livery is nothing special.

Oh come on. Lighten up. It is just creativity. Maybe you need to be more creative too.

Stop being a jealous hater towards what other airlines have and you don't/

    2. John Guest

I would rather focus on substance than fluff (i.e. 'creativity'). The paint job will come and go. The seats, the customer service, all that substantive stuff that matters is overlooked. But go ahead and enjoy your 'creativity'.

Crane? I thought it was a Pointer that’s spotted a duck.

That 747 gonna be getting mad btches

LH should just make this their standard livery.

I love the HUGE crane on the fuselage and its placement on the fuselage of the different aircraft. The airplane's wings end up acting like the crane's wings!

Now they’ve expanded this to 7 aircraft with 2 A320s (D-AIND and D-AING), I think it would be great to see some other aircraft wear this to mark their whole fleet at the time of the 100th anniversary celebration:

    - A319
    - A320 (ceo)
    - A321 (ceo)
    - A330-300
    - A340-300
    - A340-600
    - B747-400
    - B777F
    - CRJ-900

Sadly the 777-9 is late to the party.

I think the A380 looks especially good… the crane is so big on the really tall fuselage and it seems to fit the proportions so well.

Lipstick on a pig (LuftKafka is the pig, not the plane).

Interesting, so many airlines celebrating 100 years the same year? American, United, Lufthansa, etc.

    1. Ross Guest

Interesting, only one airline ignoring what it was doing during the decade of the 1940s

    2. Julie Guest

And Delta decided they had a new fake birthday to be first. Go figure...

  15. Alert Guest

Nothing "gorgeous" about the design . The white diagram is too "busy" and not-flowing . Best design ever was Southwest's Orca ( killer whale ) , which flowed like a whale through the water .

    1. wpcoe Gold

The first thing that sprang to mind when I saw the 747 and A380 was an orca. Only after remembering what it was supposed to be could I shift my focus and see the crane, but first impression was (and still is) an orca.

  16. BenjaminKohl Diamond

Ben, there's actually now two 320neos with the special livery!

  17. Barbarella Guest

The livery looks nice on both double deckers as it highlights the crane's head and the diagonal shape on a dark background elevates the silhouette. I think it benefits the A380 more than the 747 as it adds a lot of much needed "lift" to the Whale.

It's a bit crammed on the single deckers.

  18. WHS Guest

D-AIND is another A320neo in the centennial livery.

Too bad they wasted all that paint on disgusting Airbuses, especially that disgusting fat pig.

Pull out your meat grinder when the next 350 lands, you'll thank me !

      "...especially that disgusting fat pig."

Donald Trump is not an Airbus 380, he's just as corpulent as one.

Oh, and before someone asks if we can just discuss airplanes and travel without bringing politics into it, the answer is "sometimes." :)

  20. betterbub Diamond

Very impressive their 100th birthday livery wasn't delayed until they turned 103

  21. BAS Guest

The 747 could fly in its stainless steel skin and still be the most beautiful thing ever to conquer the skies……

The 747 is the hottest plane ever built.
