New Hilton Pay With Points App Feature: Why You Should (Probably) Skip It

Hilton Honors has announced a new way for members to redeem their points directly toward the cost of on-property spending at check-out, exclusively for elite members through the app. More options are always a good thing, but please don’t use your points this way, despite the data that Hilton is using to suggest that this is appealing.

Hilton lets elite members redeem points with app check-out

Hilton Honors has launched Pay with Points. The idea is that elite members — Hilton Honors Silver, Gold, and Diamond members — can apply points toward eligible hotel charges during digital check-out in the Hilton Honors app.

This feature is now available at 150 participating hotels in the United States. This is expected to expand to more than 800 hotels by the end of 2026, with a full rollout to more than 6,000 properties in the US and Canada by early 2027. Availability and eligible redemption options may vary by property.

Hilton claims it’s the first major hotel brand to offer something like this through a fully digital check out experience with no front desk visit required. That’s true, though the point of differentiation here isn’t the ability to redeem points toward on-property spending, but instead, the ability to do this without interacting with someone at the front desk. Accor Live Limitless, Global Hotel Alliance, and World of Hyatt, all let you redeem points toward hotel costs at check-out.

Will this be a good way to redeem Hilton Honors points?

Okay, so let’s actually talk about this for a second. More redemption options are always a good thing, assuming nothing is being taken away, so I don’t want to criticize Hilton for this.

While Hilton isn’t stating how much value you’ll get per point when redeeming this way, I think it’s safe to say the value will be very poor. After all, Hilton will presumably be on the hook for paying cash to properties to compensate them for purchases offset with points.

I value Hilton Honors points at 0.5 cents each, and there’s no denying that outsized redemptions have become harder to come by. I’d expect that you’ll get significantly less value per point with this method. For example, if you want to redeem Hilton points toward Amazon purchases, you get 0.2 cents of value per point. So I’d expect the value to be between the two.

The reason these redemptions are lower value is because you can redeem smaller quantities of points, so that helps consumers avoid breakage. It’s also interesting how this is exclusively available to elite members. What’s the logic for that? Well, the idea is that Hilton doesn’t want non-elite members to be able to easily redeem all their points.

However, I can’t help but laugh a bit at how Hilton is describing the logic for this new feature:

Pay with Points was created in direct response to Hilton Honors member feedback. According to recent Hilton research, 70% of Hilton Honors members surveyed are interested in using Points toward on-property purchases, and approximately half said the capability could make them more likely to stay or book with Hilton. Pay with Points brings flexibility into the digital stay experience, giving Hilton Honors members the ability to put their Points to work even before they leave the hotel.

Was the research really conducted by asking “hey, would you be interested in redeeming points for on-property purchases?” Who would say no to that? Is the 70% number supposed to be impressive? I assume the question wasn’t framed with disclosure of the subpar value this would offer.

Bottom line

Hilton is rolling out a new Pay with Points feature, whereby elite members can redeem points through the Hilton Honors app toward the cost of stays, including on-property spending. The idea is that by checking out through the app, members can choose to partially offset costs.

Hilton isn’t publishing how much value you’ll get per point, but I think it’s safe to say that the redemption value here will be very subpar, given that Hilton will presumably be paying face value for these redemptions.

What do you make of Hilton’s new Pay with Points option? If anyone sees this during a stay, please report back on how much value per point this offers.

Welp, ‘new’ doesn’t always mean ‘good,’ now, does it… Yeah, this one’s likely a ‘nope.’
