American & Hyatt End Partnership: Not Much Of A Loss, Except Status Fast Tracks

American & Hyatt End Partnership: Not Much Of A Loss, Except Status Fast Tracks

3

In 2019, American AAdvantage and World of Hyatt launched a partnership, offering reciprocal status and points earning opportunities. While this was initially quite lucrative, it was scaled back significantly over time. We’ve now learned that the “enhanced” partnership will be ending altogether.

American AAdvantage & World of Hyatt cut ties

American AAdvantage and World of Hyatt will be ending their partnership in the coming months. As it’s described, this came after “careful consideration,” and it was “mutually decided.”

For the remainder of each program’s current year, American AAdvantage and World of Hyatt members will see no interruption in earning or selecting and redeeming their eligible benefits:

  • American AAdvantage members who have linked their accounts by November 15, 2026, can continue to earn World of Hyatt awards with the Loyalty Point Rewards program through February 28, 2027
  • World of Hyatt members who have linked their accounts by November 15, 2026, can continue to earn AAdvantage awards with the Milestone Rewards program through December 31, 2026

It’s worth emphasizing that while the “enhanced” partnership is ending, the basic partnership that the two brands have will continue. With this, AAdvantage members can continue to earn 500 AAdvantage miles per eligible Hyatt stay, in lieu of earning World of Hyatt points (which I wouldn’t consider to be worthwhile).

What are the practical implications of this change?

Back when American AAdvantage and World of Hyatt first launched their partnership, there was significant upside for travelers. That’s because American AAdvantage members could earn one mile per dollar spent with Hyatt, while World of Hyatt members could earn one point per dollar spent with American, above and beyond the “native” earning opportunities.

The two companies greatly scaled back their partnership as of early 2025, whereby there was no more automatic reciprocal points earning. Instead, the primary published perk has been the ability to use the Loyalty Point Rewards and Milestone Rewards programs to redeem for awards with the other program. However, that was never really a particularly efficient redemption option, as I see it, given the opportunity cost.

In recent times, the biggest value with this partnership has been the reciprocal status challenge opportunities we’ve seen on an annual basis. This was never a published thing, but these offers did seem to be offered every year, so it was a great way to get a status fast track with the other program. It’s a shame we’ll no longer see those.

I am curious what’s driving this change, especially with World of Hyatt and Air Canada Aeroplan recently launching a partnership. Did American just insist on some sort of exclusivity? Or is World of Hyatt launching a new partnership with Delta SkyMiles, or something? I imagine it wouldn’t be United MileagePlus, given its close partnership with Marriott Bonvoy.

Bottom line

American AAdvantage and World of Hyatt will end their “enhanced” partnership as of the end of the current program year. Truth be told, there hasn’t been much value to this partnership since early 2025, when reciprocal points earning opportunities ended.

The primary published perk since then has been the ability to (mostly inefficiently) redeem Loyalty Point Rewards and Milestone Rewards perks for the other program. The other perk has been an unofficial annual status challenge, so I’d consider that to be the biggest loss here.

All of the mainstream US hotel loyalty programs are lackluster at this point. Partnerships like this don’t bring that much value IMO.

AA would be better off leaning fully into the AA Hotels platform, and developing an Amex Platinum-like FHR/HC set of benefits for their elites and cardholders.

Sad. Between their devaluations earlier this year and now this, Hyatt is not going well, lately.

Bummer. That double-dipping was a heck of sweet deal for the brief time it was active.
