Update: This offer for the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card has expired. Learn more about the current offers here.
Yesterday the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card was launched, which is the new premium IHG credit card. The card has an $89 annual fee and a welcome bonus of 80,000 IHG Rewards Club points after spending $2,000 within the first three months.
While not as compelling as IHG’s old card once was (which is no longer open to new applicants), I see a lot of value in this card. Here’s where the value in the card lies, in my opinion:
- An anniversary free night certificate that can be redeemed at hotels that cost up to 40,000 points per night (which excludes under 200 of IHG’s 5,300+ hotels around the world)
- A fourth night free on award bookings; when you redeem points for a consecutive four night stay, the fourth night is free
- A 20% discount when you purchase IHG Rewards Club points, which has the potential to be quite a deal
- IHG Rewards Club Platinum status for as long as you have the card
- A Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check credit every four years
I’d consider those to be pretty compelling benefits, and I hope to pick up this card soon myself. In this post I wanted to address a few common questions I’ve received about the card:
Is the IHG Premier Card subject to 5/24?
Many Chase cards are subject to what’s commonly known as the “5/24 rule,” where you typically won’t be approved for a card if you’ve opened five or more new card accounts in the past 24 months.
We only really learn about the policy for a given card through data points, since these policies aren’t published. There is some good news on that front. Based on several reader reports, the new IHG Rewards Club Premier Card isn’t subject to the 5/24 rule. I’ve had several readers report that they got approved in spite of being over that limit.
Can you get the IHG Premier Card if you have another IHG Card?
The new IHG Rewards Club Premier Card is considered a new product, and you can be approved for it (and receive the welcome bonus) even if you have the old IHG Card, which is no longer open to new applicants.
Can you get multiple IHG anniversary free night certificates?
The old IHG Card (which is no longer accepting new applicants) offers an anniversary free night certificate.
Now we can also get the the new IHG Rewards Club Premier Card, which also offers an anniversary free night certificate.
So does that mean it’s possible for an IHG member to have two cards that come with a total of two anniversary free night certificates every year? Yep, that should indeed be possible, as there’s nothing in the terms stating you can only have one.
While I’m of course bummed about the cap that has been placed on these stays, personally I see a lot of value in having two cards that get me two anniversary free night certificates that I can use for back-to-back stays.
While I’m bummed about the devaluation to the anniversary free night certificate on the old IHG Card, I see a lot of value in the new IHG Rewards Club Premier Card. Personally I think I’d still get value out of the card just for the anniversary free night certificate, but when you add in the discount on purchased points and the fourth night free on redemptions, this card starts to look quite generous.
