Wow: Southwest Airlines Offering 50% Off Flights

8

Southwest Airlines has just launched a pretty incredible fare sale to celebrate its 50th anniversary. You can save 50% off Southwest flights for travel this fall by using promotion code SAVE50. This includes both revenue and award flights!

There are some terms to be aware of with this promotion, as you’d expect:

  • This is valid for bookings between June 15 and June 17, 2021
  • This is valid for travel between September 15 and November 3, 2021
  • The 50% discount applies to the base fare, and not to taxes and fees
  • This promotion applies to all revenue fare types (Wanna Get Away, Anytime, and Business Select), as well as Rapid Rewards award tickets; this is definitely the time to redeem points, given that Rapid Rewards is a revenue based frequent flyer program, so you’ll get the most value here

While this promotion is only valid for new reservations, Southwest has no change fees, so you can always cancel your existing travel and rebook with this promo (just make sure the fare has in fact dropped for your particular flight).

This is a pretty awesome promo. It’s not often you see an airline offer 50% off fares with almost no restrictions. While Southwest isn’t always going to be the cheapest airline, all Southwest fares come with two checked bags, and there are no fees for seat assignments (due to Southwest’s unconventional boarding process).

I’m guessing the pandemic also makes this sale possible — while a lot of people are planning summer travel right now, I imagine bookings for fall are still fairly weak as of now, so I’m sure Southwest is happy to have some more future bookings.

Bottom line

Southwest Airlines is offering 50% off flights this fall by using promotion code SAVE50. This is a pretty spectacular promo, especially since it applies to both cash and award flights. If you have any fall travel to plan (or have already booked fall travel but can rebook), then I’d definitely recommend taking a look at this offer.

Anyone taking advantage of this Southwest fare sale?

Like Brandon I used the promo code and the price at checkout was the EXACT SAME price. There was no 50% disclount and I'm on a 75 minute hold with SWA to see if we can sort this out

I tried to book a flight without the code and with the code, it was the EXACT SAME PRICE. I made sure to fall within the guidelines and all. SAME PRICE.

Made the change yesterday (6/15) for an already-booked itinerary in early October - got initial resistance regarding "new reservations only" but convinced the rep to rebook for me. In the end the change was successful and saved over 30% rewards points for flights for myself and my wife - there was a slight challenge because I waited 90 minutes to talk to an agent, then the re-book was interrupted by the second major Southwest outage...

After a delay of over four hours, and another 90 minute wait to talk, the next rep completed the switch and we were rebooked with big savings on the promotion.

Cancelled points round trip from IND to RNO in September and rebooked. While both fares had gone up the 50% discount still lowed the final price considerably. Great deal.

I booked "Wanna get away" flights last month. Am I able to switch these out with the promo? (assuming the flights are there)

Booking using points do work if you click on 'Book with promo code'.

@ Melissa @ Mark -- Whoops, good catch, thank you! Updated the post to reflect that. Awesome.

It does include reward flights. Use the code save50 and it’ll work.
