Lufthansa Credit Card Offering 80K Bonus Miles

8

A credit card that I don’t often talk about is offering a limited time welcome bonus at the moment. While it’s not for everyone, I’m sure some will find this to be worthwhile.

Lufthansa Miles & More Card offering 80K bonus miles

Through November 30, 2022, the Lufthansa Miles & More World Elite Mastercard issued in the United States is offering a bonus of 80,000 miles after spending $3,000 within the first 90 days. The card is issued by Barclays, so standard application restrictions apply.

Is the Lufthansa Miles & More Card worth it?

The Lufthansa Miles & More Card has an $89 annual fee, and offers some perks, including:

  • 2x miles on purchases directly with Lufthansa, and 1x miles on all other purchases
  • Two Lufthansa Business Lounge vouchers annually, which can be used at any Lufthansa Business Lounge globally within 12 months
  • An annual economy companion ticket every year, which must be booked via the Miles & More companion ticket service hotline, at 866-461-5399; note that this has a high minimum fare requirement, so for most travelers this won’t be worth it

Here’s my take on the card:

  • Objectively the card has decent perks for the $89 annual fee; many will value the Lufthansa Business Lounge vouchers at that much, but then again, keep in mind the Amex Platinum also offers access to select Lufthansa Business Lounges
  • The economy companion voucher is of little value in my opinion, given the high minimum fare requirements
  • The key advantage of having Lufthansa Miles & More miles is that you can book Lufthansa first class awards more than 15 days in advance; a one-way first class award from the United States to Europe costs 91,000 miles, plus there are significant fuel surcharges
  • Lufthansa Miles & More doesn’t partner with any of the major transferable points currencies, so it can be hard for those in the US to otherwise top off their account with more miles

Bottom line

The Lufthansa Miles & More Mastercard has a limited-time welcome bonus of 80K miles. This is one of the best offers we’ve seen on the card in a long time.

For those who have had just about all other cards, and/or those who have a specific reason they want Miles & More miles, this could be a good opportunity. However, I think the card probably isn’t worth picking up for most people. For example, I’ll be giving this card a pass.

Anyone plan on picking up the Lufthansa Miles & More Card?

The reason I keep the card is that it halts the expiration policy on miles if you make one charge per month on the card. This way I can slowly accumulate for a F award.

Is this just one charge for anything on the card or does it have to be purchased through Lufthansa?

The companion ticket requires at least a booking class of "H" - these are already quite expensive fares which I so far only used on short-term business trips. The companion ticket is not valid for premium economy, business or first class.

The lounge passes could be handy if you have a longer transfer time in Munich or Frankfurt. Since Lufthansa "owns" these terminals, there are only Lufthansa lounges airside and no Priority Pass lounges.

can you get the bonus again if you had this card with bonus before (looooong time ago) and downgraded the card? what is the barclays policy?

If you still have the downgraded card, Barclays will not approve you since it is considered the same card and only one is allowed at any given time.

If I close my Lufthansa card (applied for 50K earlier this year) - can I next day apply to the same Miles card to get the 80 000 miles?

Got the card about 3 years ago when there was a 75K bonus (25K above the regular 50K). Took months to get the extra 25K and numerous calls between Barclays and Lufthansa Miles and More, because Barclays themselves didn't know there was this offer. Eventually got it but haven't used it. The companion ticket I think is next to worthless because it requires the purchase of an expensive economy ticket (not the cheapest economy ticket)...

I'd say there is ONE good reason to get it: If you have friends or family in Europe you want to get a business class ticket for, you can do so cheaply. Fuel charges are way cheaper for itineraries starting in Europe, so you can get a Europe - US ticket with miles deals for 56K miles roundtrip and charges that run about 550-650 Euros (as opposed to 1,500 USD when starting from the US).
