We usually get a child fare when we fly to south america on Lan (nowadays, Latam). I have never taken the time to calculate the percentage though.
We also just booked tickets to Thailand on Qatar and they also gave us a discount for my daughter who is 9 (my son who is 12 was charged adult fare). Don't know what the discount was either...

I opened this article exactly because I want to drag my children half way around the world.
i am looking at biz class from CEB to LHR. The by far cheapest cash ticket for 2 adults, 1 child, and 1 lap child is with Eva, which stops over at Taipei. The one way fare (we are relocating) is approx $4.6k total. Where as other 4/5 star carriers are charging around $6k. Is this an example of what you are discussing in the article?

Green -- It could be. If you want to check, search for an adult, then an adult and a kid and see if the price doubles. If it's less than double, then yeah, there's probably child fare in play.
BUT, you might also be seeing some a case where EVA will sell the one-way ticket at half the price of the RT, and other carriers won't.
And good job dragging your kids half way around the world. If yours are like mine, they are more than willing adventurers!
Great to know about these discounts for kids. Now that Scarlett is turning two, I'm going to have to start using cash and miles/points for her tickets.
@Ron - seriously, think about the number of readers on this blog and the demographics in the US (or world)... a good chunk of us, likely a majority, are highly interested in children-related topics.
As someone who has never been a parent I find the child fare interesting. Given that a child takes up the same amount of space as an adult what's in it for airlines to do this? Is it to encourage parents to travel? I'm smaller than a lot of 11 and 12-year olds yet I have to pay full freight. I don't mind, I just can't work out why airlines do it.
As far as earning miles is concerned, after applying for personal membership accounts within SAS' EuroBonus Programn, my kids always earned the same amount of miles as I did even though they traveled on the 25% child fare (which only applied to the ticket itself but not to fees and taxes). In the past, they even let you pool your whole family's miles into one account. Unfortunately they discontinued this in early 2016, noting that they would come back with a new Family pooling program later in the year. As far as I know, this didn't materialize so far.
Not many reactions so it kind of proves my point that the topic is not so relevant. As for myself, in the diaper and toddler phase no plane travel at all for my children, as they got older some short haul only flights in EC so other travellers don't get bothered, BC and FC will be an option once they hit 14.
