In all these posts on SQ no mention of how it can take days to transfer miles over from most cc? I haven’t been burned by the award disappearing in that time interval yet, but it always makes me nervous

This question may sound stupid to most of the seasoned travellers, still I need to ask: If I book one-way award ticket, how do I fly back one-way for half price of return ticket? One way tickets usually cost the same as return tickets (at least on SQ, LH group...), so this does not make much sense to me.
Miles can be extended one time for $12 per 10K miles for 6 extra months (or 12 months with status). Better than nothing.
For one thing, you're assuming that both directions would be on the same airline/alliance. Often, that's not the case. My trip to Asia last year was Singapore-in, Qatar-out. Booked separately, and nearly $1500 cheaper than a roundtrip on either airline.
I also completely disagree with your generalized statement that one way tickets cost the same as roundtrip, even on Singapore. That hasn't been my experience at all.
Usually flights FROM Asia to North America are both much cheaper, and less varied. So when traveling, I usually book the flight from Asia to USA first. Then can spend weeks or even months trying to find the best overall deal from USA to Asia, which is usually priced far higher, but can also swing much more wildly as well.
When I first started searching the Singapore flight to Asia last year, they wanted $5700 for a one way LAX to Singapore. Screw that. It took two months, but eventually got the same flight ("SQ 37") for $3200, just by waiting patiently, and adjusting my travel plans by one day in order to get the fare.

I live in Europe and so far I have not found a one-way ticket cheaper than a return one (LH and SQ), but than again, I will check more often on the other possibilities.
