While times are tough for Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, the airline will be launching service with the Airbus A321neo in the coming weeks, which represents a major development for the airline.

I think you can argue the soft product (though I thought you were never a huge fan of Asian cuisine in your Asian airline reviews),
But it is a bit disingenuous to say that flat beds are required for a great short haul experience. No airlines in their right mind with offer across the board flat beds on 2 hour flights.

The spirit of their claim, flat seat notwithstanding, lies in the improvement of both their hard and soft products.

Agreed... though I think Singapore Airlines is the only one bucking the trend, their 7M8s will come with Thomson Vantage lieflats.

These would make great premium economy seats!

Heck, these would make great US domestic first class seats, especially for 4+ hours narrow bodies. @Lucky do you have the pitch measurements?

The old regional business class had the airbag seat belt, that and the shoulder strap are probably required since it's a hard shell you'd be running into with your head in a fast stop.

They're flying this plane to Guangzhou? Doesn't the MTR already have that route covered?

"The last time that Cathay Pacific operated narrow body planes was in 1983, when the airline retired its Boeing 707s."

Now *that* would have been something. I can't even imagine how cool a '70s era CX 707 would have been. The 707 is the quintessential airplane of my childhood; it remains, alongside the 741, my sentimental favorite.

Ben, if you ever run across any more 707 avgeeky references, make sure to post them. You'll have at least one reader. 😉

Sadly I'll never fly via Hong Kong again, way too risky with the new xinese laws. Cathay has otherwise been a pretty nice airline to travel with. Shame I had to blow my miles on "junk" instead of a flight, as Asia miles didn't allow them to be extended, despite the pandemic.

I really like the colours and finishes of the business product. I wonder if it hints at the future direction of Cathay’s cabin design.

Very true! Also here in the Americas, Copa Airlines is revolutionating the mid-haul experiece about their 737 Max-9 with their eDreams Business class, which is exactly the same one as Qatar Airways’ Superior Airbus A320 Business Class! So I agree, Cathay could have done better, at least on the A321 Neo's at the front!

I dont think Cathay will ever fly to Guangzhou unless it is Guangzhou to somewhere other than Hong Kong which is not very likely.

Cathay (Dragon) has been flying to Hong Kong-Guangzhou for years even using aircraft as big as the A330.

P.S. Ben, is something wrong with the website? I have to refresh every time in order to get the latest news. Anyone else experiencing the same?

@Bob Cathay has flown to GZ before and will continue to do so, primarily for connections. Once the border reopens the HS Train will carry the rest.

Does anyone know what the purpose is of the “bump” to the left of the aisle seat headrest? I thought maybe it’s housing for the backseat TV wires, etc. but looks to be a lot more space than needed these days.
