I’ve read countless articles on this saying different topics, so hoping the OMAAT readers can help! Can one receive the AmEx Brilliant sign up bonus if one previously signed up and received the bonus over 24 months earlier? Some have said no because of Amex once in lifetime rules, others have said yes because it’s been long enough. Welcome the suggestions, trying to ensure I have Marriott platinum status before my next big trip!
I think the confusing part is that there are two separate sets of restrictions. The 24-month rule you’re thinking of applies to certain cross-issuer situations, for example, a recent Amex Brilliant bonus can make you ineligible for a Chase Marriott bonus.
It doesn’t mean that waiting 24 months makes you eligible for another Brilliant bonus. Amex has its own rule and says you “may not be eligible” for a Brilliant welcome offer if you’ve had the Brilliant before. Fortunately, Amex should tell you via the pop-up before processing the application if you aren’t eligible.
@seat1a Ah, yes... pop-up-jail... 'PUJ' (the acronym some use). You're right to call-out that nuance (Amex vs. Chase); however, beyond the sign-up bonuses, an issue for Joe P is also that he also supposedly wants 'Platinum' status for his next big trip.
Perhaps, he's hoping to enjoy complimentary breakfasts each morning (that could be a 'guaranteed' benefit, depending on the property, or not), or *fingers-crossed* he hopes to receive an early check-in, late check-out, or upgraded room (all of which are never 'guaranteed').
If Joe already received the Amex Brilliant SUB years ago, and ends up in PUJ, I'd say, the 'juice is not worth the squeeze' just to get Platinum before the stay. Sure, sure, 'price of eggs,' but, like, breakfast isn't really that expensive (to justify a non-SUB, $650 AF card).
Joe, help us out, what are your *real* priorities here? Do you want the SUBs, free breakfasts, etc.
Appreciate input from you both! Free breakfast I am fairly indifferent on, it's really the upgraded rooms. I am a lifetime Marriott Gold today and am planning a trip for my wife and I this January. A few days at JW Marriott Seoul, Bach Suites Saigon and Duxton Reserve in Singapore. Though I am now wondering if Platinum won't even get me upgrades for the latter 2 hotels?
