No normal airline would operate these flights due to the protest arm of the left. In turn, massive tax expenditures with the same end result, except the big money is going to contractors instead of the big three, which would benefit customers and the unions alike. Good job guys!

I do see a potential upside to the government owning the planes. It allows airlines to bid on these contracts without having to invest into aircraft. That might result in more bidders and better offers.
However I doubt considerable savings will be achieved when looking at the total cost. I could imagine that administering a rather niche fleet within ice comes with considerable administrative effort.
