BHM is Birmingham, Alabama; I would assume the choice for a stopover for Biman Bangladesh would be BHX which is Birmingham in the UK.
This is just a vanity thing in conjunction with the new terminal opening in Dhaka. If it is 1 stop, given Bimans service/relaibility or lack there of, public would be more inclined to take the ME carriers.
Lol a friend almost made that mistake while trying to book a flight from Amsterdam. She didn't understand why it was expensive to fly from Amsterdam to Birmingham England and asked me to look at the itinerary. Thankfully we found out the mistake. Google flight had used BHM rather than BHX
Biman would have operated this flight from Dhaka non-stop, had there been no restrictions over Afghanistan, Russia and Ukraine. That was the original plan for Toronto flights too. But now the airline has a pit stop in Turkey in both directions to/from Toronto for refuelling, recatering and a crew change. Biman makes money in that route because of a dedicated Bangladeshi customer base. The same will be true for the New York flights.
I think a interesting transit stop for this route could be in pakistani cities Lahore, Islamabad, or Karachi with fifth freedom rights both between Bangladesh and Pakistan as well as Pak/USA. Given the decline of PIA, this could actually be a profitable combination with nearly 100% load factors directly competing with ME3, just as Air India does with its US nonstops

Question 1 - would the second leg be a fifth freedom flight?
Question 2 - what happened? Did they lose their category 1 rating so then they cannot fly to the USA anymore? If they could fly before assuming they stopped for a different reason, then they should be able to fly again.
One big issue with airlines like this is the price of the tickets and a lack of partners.
FAA categories apply to the country's aviation security processes/culture/procedures in regard to ICAO standards (as perceived by the USA), not to specific airlines.
...a recurring oddity is that the FAA often finds noncompliance where no/few other major Western CAAs do: Thailand and Mexico being recent examples.
So maybe there's actual noncompliance, or maybe the right person didn't get paid off. Who knows.
It's not worthy of a non-bengali to comment on this topic. You have no idea how big the bengali diaspora is in the tri-state area. The author needs to realize that bengalis will travel on biman even if it's a sub-standard airlines...and that x factor is for all you lot to guess. With all the peculiar decisions this country has made, it has prevailed and defied all odds against it. Isn't it about time, the media swallowed its ignorance and start paying attention to what makes Bangladesh a success story.
If its profitable on Toronto flights, can you imagine how profitable it will be on the NYC flights? I completely agree. The huge Bangladeshi diaspora have for some reason a strong affinity towards the national airline. I just hope biman provides better amenities and services
