Lufthansa Pilots Offer To Take Up To 45% Pay Cuts, With A Catch

Any idea of how many pilots they employ?

A small number of those pilots will likely be retiring in the next few years anyway which will take some of the pressure off the total numbers in future years.

If Lufthansa came up with a reasonable early retirement - not redundancy - offer for those close to the normal retirement age - say those due to retire in the next 5 years - that could also help reduce pilot numbers more.

Though I'm not familiar with German employment law and if that is even possible and paying peoples pensions also has a cost as well.

That is old news. Yesterday an agreement was made between Lufthansa and the German government.

More than 10.000 Pilots are working for the Lufthansa Group airlines and more than 4000 pilots are working for Lufthansa airline.

Regardless of whether Lufthansa accepts, this offer is a reasonable one. Contrast that to how undignified US unions tend to be.

thanks. So with an entire pilot group of 10k there would likely be a few hundred minimum who retire each year - could be more could be less depending on when they were recruited there will be peaks and troughs

Even if it was only 100 a year (1% of the total which seems low to me) then that is still 100 less on the books

Now it's not going to reduce the numbers massivly immediatly but as they say every little helps

Just wanted to point out that this information simply no longer applies, as another solution was already found yesterday: The German state will acquire a stake in Lufthansa.
Correct me if I am wrong, but that’s why there is a comment section here?

Either I read it over or Ben didn't write it. The offer with wage waiver comes only from the 5000 pilots of the union "Vereinigung Cockpit" of Lufthansa and Eurowings (not Swiss or Austrian).

100% pay for 100% work.
45% pay for 0% work.
Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

Bill it’s actually 55% Pay and I doubt they won’t be working at all thru 2022.
