This past weekend I stayed at the Nines in Portland, which is a Starwood Luxury Collection hotel. I had never visited Portland before and had heard good things about the Nines, so when I saw a reasonable fare and also a reasonable rate at the hotel I jumped on the opportunity. My rate was about…

Did you eat something off the tenderloin or was the presentation just a bit...lacking?

Couldn't they have put some garnish or something on that plate? It looks so bare with only meat on it.

Nice detailed review though

Lucky... You got the protein and starch right, but two starches instead of veggies? I'm not your mother, but eat your vegetables! 🙂

If wild, cattle would be eating grasses, so that's most natural. Analysis shows that grass-fed beef has more of the good omega fatty acids.

Ever watched Portlandia on IFC? Here's a clip, in which a couple orders chicken in a Portland restaurant:

I stay at the Nines when I visit my sister who lives near Portland, I like really like the location and almost everything about the hotel. It seems like they usually have pretty good rates to keep the place full, but it is also sometimes hard to get a reservation if you do not plan far enough ahead. I'm glad you had a good stay there.

I love Portland, and The Nines. We were in the midst of a mattress run (Hilton) when visiting the city so we only had drinks and dinner there. Yes, the restaurant was a bit over the top with the organics/sustainability menu but that's what The Nines is about, I guess. Their outdoor bar/lounge was v cool. I've been eying the FHR rates there & hope to be back early 2012. Hope you booked through FHR...

She doesn't mean the beef will taste like grass-- she means you can taste the difference between grass fed and grain fed beef. The former having a leaner and beefier flavor while the latter is more fatty and the flavor is not as deep.

If you were previously a vegetarian, you should especially appreciate and look for grass-fed beef. Grass is what cattle were meant to eat. It's healthier for them, for us, and for the environment. A grass-fed cow is usually a much happier cow than a grain-fed one stuck in a CAFO, knee-deep in their own excrement. Grass fed is (usually) a more humane way of farming. For both moral and health reasons, I only eat grass-fedd beef. Never corn-fed if I can help it.

I think that the execution here is far better for SPG elites than just low/no status level plebes. I did not have a very good experience at this hotel, but it sure does seem like I am the only one.

I thought that the service was over the top - but, over the top snooty. They did not have my confirmed bed type and when I inquired as to why I was brusquely told that I was lucky that they "saved me a room."

The location and the food in the restaurant were both good, but with plenty of other hotel options and fantastic places to eat in Portland, I won't be racing back to The Nines any time soon.

You'd be better off passing on the crappy meat they serve on planes. Eat less, but better, meat.

Great review! Your picture brought back wonderful memories. We enjoyed our first visit to Portland and stayed at The Nines in July.

i'm pretty sure lucky used FHR benefits (pricematched FHR rate with spg.com rates) for daily breakfast & $100 food n beverage on his $120 rate and just attached his SPG Platinum number to his reservation so that he could get free high speed internet, stay credit, and amenity points

cause thats what i would've done!!! looked fabolous lucky

We're PDX bound. The Westin and 9's are both 10,000 point properties. The only difference is the Westin has C&P (cash and points) available on my dates. This time, the Westin wins, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Thanks for the write-up! I plan on visiting Portland this weekend and am staying at the Nines. Random question, how did you gain platinum status with SPG?

We stayed at the Nines for 6 days. Overall, really enjoyed our stay! Here are the staff members that really shined:
1. Juan - Reception - exceptionally welcoming!
2. Paul - Valet - Really efficient and cheerful!
3. Poe - Restaurant Manager - Welcoming, funny and set a positive tone for the visitors and staff!
4. Kendal - Waitress - always smiling and easy to talk to!
Suggestion
1. Have a "Grab and Go" counter for visitors who can't stay for a "sit down" meal!
