Was pleasantly surprised by EY recently. Lounge in AUH was average but onboard food and service were no worse than EK (though no bar), drinks not as good as EK and QR of course rule the ME3 roost. Still, not the poorer cousin they're portrayed as IMO.
On 2014-15 New Years Eve, I flew KLM from Amsterdam to Atlanta. At midnight Amsterdam time, KLM had a brief New Years celebration with Champaign and an in flight video of fireworks. This was completely unexpected and the captain made the announcement that all KLM flights, worldwide, were observing the celebration based on Dutch time. It was a very nice flight.
I hope they have that offering in addition to the normal menu. Not everyone will want to eat it. In addition, I am surprised more airlines do not do such festivities for New Years. I would have thought flights that are late enough on 12/31 would be relatively cheap as one would not be at their destination for the "big" moment. It is almost like traveling on New Years Day or Christmas Day.
