I booked a one-way award from PHL to CDG (AA754) using AAdvantage miles. The original departure time was 8/11 10:05pm. Due to maintenance issues, there was a delay and then an aircraft swap. Because the aircraft was downgraded from a 787-900 to 787-800, I was involuntarily downgraded to Premium Economy. AA gave me a $600 voucher.  My question is, is this fair compensation for a J to PE downgrade and 3 hr delay?  Should I ask for compensation in miles?  It’s 8/12 1:04am, and boarding is finally complete but we are still at the gate.

@mangoceviche Yikes, sorry to hear about that! Whatever compensation you were offered should be in addition to the difference in miles between the two cabins. So I'd expect to be reimbursed some miles (reflecting the difference in cost), in addition to the voucher. I'd recommend reaching out to customer relations.

It's too bad this didn't apply on a flight departing Europe (or on a European carrier departing the US), in which case EC261 would apply:

Hope the rest of your trip goes more smoothly!

Ben - thanks for the advice!

In my rush to get my earlier message posted before take off, I forgot to include the part that I am connecting in CDG to Asia on the same award ticket, a flight I would’ve missed anyway even though my connection was almost 4 hours without the delay.

Anyway, AA754 ended up getting cancelled.  We flew for a little over an hour and the captain announced during meal service that we would be returning to PHL due to a mechanical issue. Long story short, I asked customer service if I could be rebooked on Qatar J and the agent did it for me. So I guess now I won’t be asking for fare/mile difference.

@mangoceviche Ouch, that's a rough travel day! But in the end I'd say that's actually a pretty good resolution, as I'd much rather fly QR than a combination of AA and whatever else. A $600 voucher in the process doesn't sound too bad.

@Ben, are the "Helpful" buttons not working? Tried to do so on multiple comments, and they never stick.
