This program got nerfed so hard. It used to be one of the best and now it’s just meh unless you’re adding stopovers.

That isn't true. ANA had provided that functionality for a long time.
I just booked Ethiopian Airlines through Aeroplan and had to go to the Ethiopian site to pick my seat.
That functionality isn't universal for all partner airlines. With ANA, it works for many partner airlines, but not all. I assume it's going to be the same with Aeroplan.
@Andrew wouldn't say it got nerfed it got a lot more flexible and better for frequent flyers of the program while still allowing "distanced user" options via point transfers... it got a lot better for people who Actually fly star alliance... like nyc to Sydney round trip for in business class for 34K Aeroplan Points is incredible... you just have be loyal to the program to get the best benefits like these... wouldn't be surprised if other airlines started doing this
