EK17 To Manchester: Having The Best Time And Keeping It Green While Ben Goes Amber
Greetings from Stockholm. But lets not get too far ahead. In terms of my review, we have only just escaped the Tropicana mostly unscathed. We hadn't even lost any money, unlike last time Ben and I were in Las Vegas (fortunately not at the Tropicana), where Ben made generous donations to the Cosmopolitan foundation. Upon…

"From our prior flight, we learned that Emirates has a red, amber (we US Americans call it yellow), and red light system"
I'd guess there should be a green in there somewhere?
Anyway, I'm shocked...shocked I say, to learn that Ben is a lightweight! Who'd have thought? Good read, thanks!
I was wondering if Toby the Purser was THE Toby the Purser... and yes it was. Hey Tobes! Ben's flown with him before.
Fun drinking game: while reading this report, take a sip of your alcoholic-beverage-of-choice* every time the word champagne is mentioned...you'll be drunker than Lucky was in no time!
*of course, champagne is preferred, especially Dom Perignon...
Just a quick note on "As far as I know, Emirates is the only non-US carrier that serves warm nuts."
--> Cathay does this on their business class product as well.
Jerome -- good to know. That hasn't been my experience in CX first.
N -- this was part of the Alaska Airline Mileage Plan redemption. For 100,000 miles we routed DFW-DXB-MAN. There's also currently a bonus on purchased points. See here: https://onemileatatime.com/buy-alaska-miles/
i don't know. Having been there, I just don't find alcohol abuse as engaging and funny as you seem to. I guess that's why you two are twinks in your twenties and not hooked up to a machine like I am! Not jealous, just telling you I've walked your road and it does come to a stop sign
This was a definitely good read. One of my favorite aspects of flying is being able to exchange a few words with the cabin crew and getting to know them. I find it fascinating as each crew has a story, different background and exciting things to share. I really love getting to know them specially when it's a long flight. I feel at comfort and at peace that I have these great crew looking after me. Nice post 🙂
@Matt, like your trip view. It made me smile. And I agree having some banter with the flight crew usually makes a flight more enjoyable.
I have been enjoying this trip report and especially your writing style Matt. I hope you won't be too bogged down in your new job to not be able to travel and at least be an occasional contributor to this blog. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Matt/ Lucky - As a Mancunian I'm interested in your views of Manchester Airport (what was the deal with security?!), and of our city itself - did you get any time to spend exploring?
You're behaviour on board is absolutely disgusting. The crew are paid to be friendly to you but trust me, we hate passengers with your sort of behaviour
@emily, being an Emirates first class crew myself, I would have loved to serve both Matt and Ben on board. Please speak for yourself when you make comments like those. It doesn't seem like they did anything wrong. They merely enjoyed their trip, for which they paid anyway! Maybe you should think how you would act if you were in their position.
Being an Emirates first class flight attendant myself, I would have loved to serve both Ben and Matt. @Emily, please don't include all flight attendants (or even just Emirates flight attendants) on your own feelings.
They did nothing wrong. Simply they enjoyed the product they paid for. I'm very happy their experience on board wasn't affected by your "fake" niceness.
Hello! The Emily above was not the operating crew and her feelings are not from experience on that flight! It was my pleasure to have you on board! Note @gongas that Emily is a very common name, so please retract your fake niceness comment. Look forward to Bens review to see his side of things!
Great review, Matt - really enjoyed your writing style and definitely seemed like a top crew!
The food options seemed all very fishy, I'm assuming this is just your personal preference and not a reflection of their menu not offering many other alternatives? (sadly I'm not at all a fish fan!)
Emily T. -- thank you for saying that; the pleasure was certainly ours as well. I too look forward to Ben's review -- I think it will be coming fairly soon!
EGCBSteve -- coming soon.
Alan -- there were many meat and vegetarian options as well. I really like fish. You'd have no trouble avoiding it, however. Ben will post a menu with his review.
Everyone else who enjoyed the post, thank you for your kind words!
I must say flying EK F, almost every single FA has been superb, minus a few bad apples.
Great report Matt.
Ek17 on the 11th back on 14th sep in f can't wait.
Always quite full and the bar is fun. Can't wait to stuff myself with dp05 and get to Amber 🙂
I followed your recommendation to watch Kingsmen on my flight yesterday. N1. It was only available in English and I'm German, so I do not understand everything perfectly, especially because of the accent.
Does the princess in jail at the end of the movie say: "If you gonna save the world, I'm gonna save my asshole for you"..?..hahaha...I rewinded 3 times to see if I understood correctly.
As long as you don't disturb other passengers or become a flight safety risk, I don't have a problem with you consuming alcohol. But I do scratch my head about the compulsion to get as cut as possible, as quick as possible (which does tend to be a culture here in Australia and the United Kingdom and elsewhere within some sub-groups). Seems rather pointless really.
The trouble is people can, in chasing that aim, easily cross the line. I just had an International Qantas flight where one woman (who was a lawyer apparently, and was onward connecting to another flight to boot) clearly overdid it and began cat-calling out across the cabin, between drunkenly singing, before progressing to throwing things around the forward cabin. Crew were pretty ineffective in dealing with it, and didn't move her, so ultimately I sat for landing in the second Business cabin just to get away from that craziness. She was so drunk that upon landing, and her attempting to get out of her seat, she apparently fell face first into the floor.
There's nothing fun about being paralytic, and I'm far from being an alcohol wowser, but I just don't see the point to drinking to absolute excess - even if there is Krug or something else spectacular on offer. Moderation is just right, as far as I'm concerned. It's not like the world is going to run out of alcohol tomorrow.
Small world after all, with an airline so big with so many crew members.. I knew Patricia and she is wonderful!
Great report Matt I too like your writing style. @EmilyT nice of you to clarify for us and I would love to fly with you! I have been reading Ben for awhile and from just reading his blog I can tell he is a really nice guy as is Matt. It sounds like you two had a great time! For those of you whining lighten up.
Great review! Matt the fish you ate was called black cod. The other name is Sablefish. I'm an Alaskan fishermen and it's very important to the fisheries that this product gets differentiated from regular "Cod." Regular Cod is completely different product used mostly in Fish and Chips.
Black Cod is a rare and unique fish that is sustainability harvested in Alaska. They taste wonderful and are completely different than regular Cod. Glad you enjoyed it and I look forward to my first time flying 1st class on Emirates after your and ben's reviews!
Hahaha in the last photo, Verica is a very close friend of mine, nice to see her face.
