What You Need To Know About Delta's Big LAX Move
As you probably know by now, Delta is about to undergo a massive change at Los Angeles International Airport which will affect not only legions of Delta flyers but also flyers on Air Canada, Virgin America, JetBlue, Allegiant, Spirit, and Hawaiian.

So with VX I think moving to terminal 6, there will be no lounge to use for F pax effective after this transition?
Nice post Ben. I agree with Makr, what will Priority Pass access look like after these changes?
I taxied by Terminal 3 last weekend. It looked to me like Delta may be building an outdoor "Sky Deck" adjacent to where the VX lounge was located. We will have to see. I can't think of another reason why they would be doing roof construction right there.
Has Delta indicated how they plan to divide up gate assignments between the two terminals? E.g., send all the higher value transcons out of T2? Or will it be a total free for all?
Is Air Canada going to move the Maple Leaf lounge to T6 or will they use the new United Club?
Isn't the VS Clubhouse in Terminal 2 at LAX? I wonder if DL folks have access to that lounge? I know at JFK only LHR bound DL pax have access but I don't think Delta flies to LHR from LAX.
On a related note, do you know when Air Canada will open a MLL in its new home of T6?
@ KP @ David @ Eric -- A new Maple Leaf lounge should be opening in T6 on May 17th as well. We're trying to get more details.
Thanks @Tiffany. Maybe if we're Star Alliance Gold, we will have access to the new United Lounge at T7 as well. If memory serves, T6 & T7 are connected after going through security.
The issue is that whatever Delta say by posting info online and having signage , renderings and handing out flyers customers will look at terminal 3 and that will be their impression , irrespective of rebuilding etc
..first impressions !
T3 needs demolishing aka the old t2 was
It would also be better if LAX renumber terminals - 2/3 become 2 as it gives a better image that DL operate from one terminal , TBIT (3) , 4, 5-6 becomes 5 and then 6
@ David -- Yep! TBIT through T8 are now connected airside, you'll just feel a bit like a hamster making the trip.
As an American and Alaska/Virgin loyalist, I am more than happy for this move (though I definitely get the pain points for Delta). At last I do not have the step in the decrepit terminal that is T3 that feels like a cramped dungeon (and the layout is horribly inefficient). I'm also delighted that I am free to dine at the Lemonade in T5 without feeling guilty that I'm cheating on American to go to Delta since I feel that T4's dining selection is crap, even post renovation.
Though I have a question about this T3 satellite construction. Does this mean they are building a new satellite terminal for Delta Connection planes, ala Eagle's Nest, or does satellite mean something else in the terminal that's not the concourse?
@Jon W: Good question in regards to T3. The term "satellite" initially through me since I don't believe they intend to build a midfield terminal for T3, but I think the "satellite" refers to the bulb at the end of the T3 pier. I think.
@Nick Guess we should have done some cursory Google as "LAX Terminal 3 Satellite" leads to this as the first result: http://www.lawa.org/ourLAX/CurrentProjects.aspx?id=13905
And yup they mean the poorly layout bulb as the satellite.
@Nick @ Jon W.
this is the " satellite " in the link below
From my understanding the entire structure will be rebuilt
Terminal 2 was the same pre 1980s and was entirely demolished and rebuilt whilst still operating albeit with a tent like structure where T1 is now
Terminal 5 is the only other structure which was rebuilt as the others incl 4 , 6 and 7 had a connector built to link with the satellites
@Jon W. thanks for the link. That explains it all. It appears the "remodel" of Terminal 3 is going to be an 80% demolition/rebuild.
@Nick, your terminology is correct. Remember that originally when LAX was built in the 60s there was no concourse between the curbside / ticket counters and the satellites / gates. Passengers walked through tunnels to get to their gates. The concourses out to the satellites, and the double decking of the airport, weren't added until the '84 Olympics.
Regarding transfer from T2/T3 to TBIT for Virgin Australia passengers arriving on Delta flights, Virgin Australia responded to an inquiry of mine in which they said that as of 13 May, transfer buses will operate from both Terminals 2 and 3 connecting to Virgin Australia flights in TBIT.
You'll need to show a boarding pass at the Bus Gates located at Gate 35 (T3) and Gate 22 (T2)
"...Delta ONE Lounge concept die on the vine for now..."
Remember. Delta is absolutely not committed to consistency or fulfilling promises made to travelers....
It seems just the other day Ben was giving great reviews to the gorgeous Sky Club in T5.
And, of course, none of this helps with the narrow alleys, lack of cross airport taxiways, and wicked bad access to the LAX itself.
Face it, LAX will be a third-world airport for years to come.
I use it weekly and hate every second of it.
Has anyone seen when AA may open the T5 AC? On a side note I flew out of that gate tucked behind Rock and Brews last week - total cluster!
Good think for AC, I've been told by AC concierge last Monday, that Maple Leaf biz lounge will be transferred but will accept biz class travelers and travelers with highest AC level.
So I am (unfortunately) flying on a VIrgin Australia flight (operated by Delta) landing Saturday morning 6:45am at LAX from Sydney I would assume at TBIT.
I am prepared for the chaos...
1) my connecting domestic flight will likely then be a T2 or T3- how do I get there after clearing customs/immigration? Will I need to exit security and take bus?
2) after a 13 hour flight what Delta Skyclub options will I have?
Thanks!
Terminal 2 is fabulous? Are you kidding me? They just slapped new fixtures and paint onto an old terminal. The terminal is crowded, the security queue area is much too small... Actually they did nothing to improve that area. The food options are crappy after trying 3 of their restaurants in two visits. Gate areas are too small, bad shopping. I don't know what you are talking about. It's revamped but it's putting new paint and fixtures on an old frame.
