In August, the chairman of Kingboard Chemical (which sell its Cathay's share to Qatar) said that the company will hold the share in long term, and expected that share price will double to hkd$20 in 2020. He further praised the service of Cathay, and told to the reporter that he always travel by Cathay with his family and be proud of it.

When you're as heavily under siege as Qatar is from Saudi and many of its other neighbours, seeking closer ties with powerful people is a sensible strategy.

As you mentioned, Cathay is part-owned by Air China, itself a government-owned entity.

Qatar now has a new friend to play with.
