For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points.

At the moment there’s a targeted Amex Offer for 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you make a single purchase of $500+ for a prepaid hotel booking through amextravel.com by December 31, 2017.

Do keep in mind that this promotion is targeted, though it at least seems to be pretty widely targeted. For example, in my case I see the offer on The Platinum Card® from American ExpressThe Business Platinum® Card from American ExpressThe Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express, etc.

The thing that makes this deal even more valuable is that both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express offer 5x points for hotels booked through amextravel.com. In other words, if you take advantage of this offer and spend exactly $500 using one of those cards, you’d earn 12,500 Membership Rewards points. I value those at ~1.7 cents each, meaning that you’re getting ~$212 worth of points on your $500 worth of spend. That’s a return of over 40%, which is excellent.

The big catch when making hotel bookings through amextravel.com is that you typically won’t earn points with your preferred hotel loyalty program, since this qualifies as a third party booking. Furthermore, bookings through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts don’t qualify for this promotion, since they’re not prepaid and are through a different website.

For many there will be an opportunity cost to taking advantage of this promotion. However, for those who aren’t super hotel loyal, it could make sense to forego hotel points in order to earn $200+ worth of rewards on $500 of hotel spend. Furthermore, this is a great promotion if you’re staying at an independent hotel that isn’t otherwise eligible for points accrual.

Does anyone plan on taking advantage of this Amex Offer for amextravel.com?

  1. I wasn’t targeted. I’ve never made a hotel booking through amextravel.com, but have made multiple queries there recently. Do you think Amex is scrupulous enough to notice that behavior, or is it just bad luck on my part?

  2. I used it for an independent hotel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. The booking taxes and fees are applied as part of $500 total. None of the Amex reps could answer that question but I got the points confirmation moments after making the booking.

  3. @Andy

The charge has to post by 12/31/17, you could stay later, which means you have to be charged immediately.

I booked a pre-paid Best Western rate back in August to take advantage of an Amex Offer and the charge never posted immediately and I didn’t receive the bonus.

The reason was that that specific Best Western was closing it’s doors and later canceled my reservation.

I found it strange that I was not charged immediately for a pre-paid stay.

  4. I recently made a booking through amextravel.com – do you think they’ll let me get that offer, even though I haven’t been targeted with the offer?

  5. Lucky, this offer has been around for a while, right? I booked one night over new year’s thru amex travel back in July. Got the bonus points within a couple of days.

  6. I always am unhappy reading the special offers Amex gives its American cards. They do nothing at all for the Canadian cards and charge us more for the card. We’re all jealous and trying to get “immigrant status”

At least this offer is unattractive to me as I value the hotel rewards more than money in many cases. As has been widely reported, Honors Diamond status does nothing of any value in the US but as soon as you travel to Europe or Asia you are actually treated with great respect and the upgrades are generally fabulous. That’s what makes it work for me.
