In the interest of full disclosure, OMAAT earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers (terms apply) that we have found for each card. For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings and bonus offers. In many cases the offers can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. These offers come in different forms, including discounts and even in some cases bonus points.

At the moment there’s a specular new targeted Amex Offer for 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend $1,000+ with Air France or KLM. Note that:

  • The promotion is valid for bookings through October 31, 2019
  • You need to book through the airfrance.us or klm.us websites
  • You need to book an itinerary originating in the US and pay in USD

Note the following further exclusions:

Excludes KLM Package Deals, City Pass Amsterdam, hotel bookings, car rentals, ground transportation, tours, airport transfers, equipment services, [email protected], purchases of miles, and lounge access fees. Excludes Air France Music, Air France Saphir, Air France Shopping, convention/conference/seminar services, baggage drop off, group reservations, La Boutique Air France, parking, Stress Free Flying workshop, flight crew training, Flying Blue Store, KLM Jet Center, KLM Wanna Gives. Excludes bookings made via a travel agent.

KLM’s 787 business class

As is the case with most Amex Offers, this promotion is targeted, though it seems to be pretty widely targeted.

Ideally you’d see this offer on The Platinum Card® from American Express, which offers 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare purchased directly from airlines.

In other words, a $1,000 airfare purchase with Air France or KLM using the Amex Platinum Card would earn 25,000 Membership Rewards points, in addition to whatever miles you’d otherwise earn.

I value Membership Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me that’s the equivalent of a ~$425 return on a $1,000 Air France or KLM purchase.

Then factor in the travel that you’re getting, not to mention the miles you can earn for the ticket with your preferred program, and you’re looking at quite a deal.

Do you plan on taking advantage of this great Air France-KLM Amex Offer?

  1. Flights need to be booked on AF or KLM websites, but codeshares on Delta metal would also qualify, I assume?

  2. The U.K. platinum really is rubbish ROI compared to the American counterpart.
I am seriously considering not renewing it with the huge fee increase.

  3. @DTS and @DLPTATL – I booked Delta metal through AF last time and it worked. But I called Amex to confirm before I did so. Might not hurt to confirm again before you do.

  4. @DLPTATL – sorry I misread your comment, my flight was international. So I’m not sure about domestic.

  5. “Spend a minimum of $1,000 in one or more eligible transactions direct with Air France or KLM by 10/31/2019”. Assuming transaction is defined as buying a ticket, not flying by 10/31?

  6. @Hepworth Amex offers usually go by the amount charged to your card so yes taxes and fees should count.

  7. I’ve also used this offer in the past to book international flights (originating in US) on DL metal using Air France’s website. Prices are the same as DL’s. An easy 20k points.

  8. Lucky, is the offer good on separate tickets using same departure/destination/travel dates for different family members when using the same AX card, so 80k points if four are traveling?

  9. @ Ben — It is not entirely clear to me, but do you think bookings made through the AMEX International Airline Program would be eligible for this rebate?
