While my preferred way to redeem Alaska Mileage Plan miles is for international premium cabin travel on their partner airlines (well, maybe less so after yesterday’s development), redeeming Alaska miles for travel on their own flights can represent a solid deal as well.
Alaska Mileage Plan is currently running an award sale, valid for tickets booked through February 19, 2018.
This sale is valid for saver level tickets in economy (if you’re an elite Mileage Plan member, economy awards can be upgraded to first class). Alaska generally has pretty good award availability on their own flights, so this is a great opportunity to score a deal on one of their flights.
You can search cities that are eligible for this promotion by entering your origin on this page, and then you’ll see all the restrictions associated with the sale, including eligible travel periods, day of week restrictions, and advance purchase requirements. For most cities it looks like travel between March 6 and May 16 is eligible, though there are some day of the week restrictions on top of that.
Alaska Mileage Plan has a great online search calendar, so once you decide which city pair you’d like to fly between, you can easily search weeks of availability in seconds.
I do see plenty of city pairs where the savings are significant, though that’s not the case across the board. Alaska Mileage Plan awards generally start at just 5,000 miles one-way for flights covering a distance of less than 700 miles, so in many cases the flights listed as costing 5,000 miles aren’t cheaper than usual. However, typically the 5,000 mile one-way pricing is the starting price, so it’s possible that there’s saver level award availability that prices at a higher cost.
While this isn’t the most amazing award sale we’ve ever seen, or anything, it’s certainly worth taking a look at what’s available and seeing if it can take you somewhere fun.
