Wow: La Compagnie Launches Newark To Dusseldorf All-Business Class Flights

25

Transatlantic all-business-class airline La Compagnie has just announced its fourth route, and it’s not to France or Italy but to Germany! Specifically, as of the spring of 2027, the airline will operate nonstop flights between Newark and Düsseldorf. This is super cool, if you ask me, though I’m curious how successful this proves to be.

La Compagnie will connect Newark & Düsseldorf

All-business-class airline La Compagnie plans to launch up to 5x weekly nonstop flights between Newark (EWR) and Dusseldorf (DUS) as of the spring of 2027. Specifically, the service will operate as of April 21, 2027, with the following schedule:

B0401 Newark to Düsseldorf departing 9:00PM arriving 10:20AM (+1 day)
B0400 Düsseldorf to Newark departing 12:00PM arriving 2:45PM

La Compagnie will fly from Newark to Düsseldorf

The 3,762-mile flight is blocked at 7hr20min eastbound and 8hr45min westbound, and will be operated by the carrier’s newly delivered Airbus A321LR (more on that in a bit). This will be La Compagnie’s fourth destination out of Newark, complementing year-round service to Paris (ORY) and Milan (MXP), as well as seasonal service to Nice (NCE).

Flights for this route are already on sale. Currently, I see fares starting at around $4,000 round-trip, but I imagine we’ll see more attractive pricing over time.

This is a fascinating new route, as this will be Dusseldorf’s only transatlantic link. For those not familiar, Düsseldorf isn’t a huge city, but it is one of the wealthier cities in Germany, and it’s not too far from Frankfurt.

It doesn’t currently have any transatlantic flights to the United States, though until 2015, Lufthansa did fly from Dusseldorf to both Chicago (ORD) and Newark (EWR). Good times, because award availability in first class on those routes was incredible! For recently, Delta did fly to Dusseldorf out of Atlanta (ATL), but that route was ultimately terminated as well.

Here’s how La Compagnie describes the logic for launching this service:

The new service responds to clear demand in North Rhine-Westphalia, a globally connected economic region with deep and longstanding ties to the U.S. Düsseldorf is one of the world’s leading trade show destinations and a hub for international companies across fashion, telecommunications, life sciences, professional services and advanced manufacturing. More than 24,000 international companies are based in the state, including approximately 1,700 U.S. companies. The United States is also North Rhine-Westphalia’s most important non-European export market, underscoring the value of direct service to New York.

As the largest airport in Germany’s most populous federal state, Düsseldorf Airport combines a strong local market with accessibility, efficiency and a premium airport environment. For leisure travelers, Düsseldorf offers art, architecture, shopping and gastronomy, while also serving as a convenient gateway to the Rhineland’s historic towns, vineyards, castles and renowned river-cruise itineraries along the Rhine. The airport’s proximity to the Netherlands and Belgium also makes the route an attractive option for travelers from neighboring regions.

La Compagnie is growing its Airbus A321neo fleet

In an era where airlines either seem to find incredible success or go out of business, La Compagnie has been one of the more steady boutique carriers, in terms of staying in business without huge growth.

The airline launched operations in 2014, and it initially flew Boeing 757-200s. In 2019, the airline retired those, and picked up two Airbus A321neos, which have operated the carrier’s network ever since. To be clear, those are just “standard” A321neos, and not A321LRs or A321XLRs.

However, they still have the range to fly across the Atlantic thanks to La Compagnie’s all-business class layout, which limits the plane’s weight, and in turn, increases range.

In the near future, La Compagnie will be growing, though. The airline has two more planes on order — an Airbus A321LR, expected to be delivered in 2027, and an Airbus A321XLR, expected to be delivered in 2028. It’s interesting how the airline will have three different variants among its four planes.

Currently, La Compagnie’s business class consists of Collins Aerospace Diamond seats in a 2-2 configuration. This is ultimately a compact business-class product, though it’s good for couples. I think La Compagnie’s value proposition has never been to offer the world’s best business class. Instead, it’s to offer a good value experience, along with the benefits of an all-business-class flight, which makes for a more relaxing experience.

I’ve been curious if the airline would introduce a new business class on its upcoming planes, and we now have an answer… sort of?

La Compagnie’s A321neos have a total of 76 business class seats, spread across 19 rows (there’s no row 13).

The seat map for La Compagnie’s upcoming Airbus A321LR shows a total of 68 business class seats, spread across 17 rows (again, there’s no row 13).

So basically, they’ve eliminated one row in front of the exit row and one behind it, while maintaining a 2-2 layout. Do they simply have the same product but with more pitch, did they introduce crew rest facilities, or what exactly is going on here? The airline hasn’t otherwise announced anything on this front, so I’m curious what the deal is.

I commend La Compagnie’s expansion creativity

Historically, the all-business-class model really hasn’t worked out that well, when you look at the number of airlines that have tried this concept but have failed. La Compagnie is one of the few successes (or at least one of the few that has stayed in business for so long — we don’t actually have a sense of the company’s financials).

Typically, the premium long-haul business case is to simply enter a really crowded market, with the idea being “if we can only get X% of the premium market, we’ll be rolling in dough.” The issue is that they typically fail to consider just how hard it is to poach business when you’re at a disadvantage on frequencies, corporate contracts, loyalty programs, name recognition, etc.

Up until now, La Compagnie has actually been competing in pretty crowded markets, at least broadly (if you consider co-terminal airports to be the same markets). Milan, Nice, and Paris are all very well served across the Atlantic.

So Düsseldorf is the first market where La Compagnie has no competition. That’s great for consumers, and it’s a commendable endeavor. Will there be enough demand for this service, though? Yes, Dusseldorf is a premium market, but on a year-round basis, will it really be possible to fill these planes with decent yields? Is the goal exclusively to serve Dusseldorf, or to possibly poach some Frankfurt traffic as well, thanks to attractive pricing?

I certainly wish the airline the best here, and I’m a huge fan of this. However, I imagine this will also be rather challenging. I’m curious what kind of incentives the airport and region are offering to the airline, as that has to be a factor here.

Will La Compagnie find success in Düsseldorf?

Bottom line

La Compagnie has announced its fourth destination out of Newark, as the airline will fly to Düsseldorf, Germany. The flights will launch in April 2027, and will operate up to 5x weekly, using the carrier’s new Airbus A321LR. The seat map suggests that the plane will have 68 seats, so that’s eight fewer seats than on the carrier’s existing A321neos.

It’s really cool to see La Compagnie innovate with service like this, given that Düsseldorf doesn’t currently have any transatlantic flights. It’s also quite a contrast to the carrier’s strategy otherwise, which consists of replicating service offered by other airlines.

What do you make of La Compagnie launching all-business-class flights to Düsseldorf?

We need this airline to fly to Toronto 🤣. Perhaps somehow do a deal to get 51% Canadian ownership and fly Toronto to Vancouver

  2. Jon Guest

Does this airline have any agreements with other airlines in case the flight is cancelled? Can their passengers be booked on a legacy carrier?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Jon -- The airline doesn't have any formal partnerships, but does have interline agreements. In line with EC261 policies, passengers would potentially be entitled to rebooking on other airlines. That being said, La Compagnie actually operates quite reliably.

    2. Klaus_S Diamond

@Ben: did you ever fly MIA-DUS on LH?
(I never did. But that was one of the last LH flights before the DUS station was closed)

    3. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Klaus_S -- Ah, that's right, they operated that as well. I never flew that, since I of course always preferred to fly out of FRA to visit the FCT. For that matter, I was usually connecting onto a larger itinerary to Asia, or something.

    4. Klaus_S Diamond

If La Compagnie doesn’t rebook in case of cancellation, you can book your own flight.

But due to the updates EU261, starting in 2027, the reimbursement will be limited to 4 times of the original ticket price.

(Though, Nobody at Ryanair thought about estimating the price for an award ticket when they were lobbying in Brussels for capping reimbursements. Will be interesting to see how Miles&More will defend themselves in front of a judge.)

And this is exactly where Carsten Spohr really hit it oh so wrong. The A321-LR/XLR would be perfect for Düsseldorf.

I get consolidating flights on FRA/MUC but given the short distance between DUS & FRA you could have the Frankfurt based crew manning the DUS-NYC LH flights without having to open a new expensive base. Time will tell.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ InceptionCat -- Totally agree with you conceptually. I think the thing is that Lufthansa management has so long banked on not really having any competition in Germany, which is why the airline feels it doesn't have to try in Berlin and Dusseldorf.

    2. Klaus_S Diamond

@Ben: I do not agree that Lufthansa does not have competition at DUS or BER.
At both airports, LH has to compete with AF/KLM, IAG, FI etc. for transatlantic flights. Since there are only indirect flights, the competition is somewhat higher for Lufthansa compared to a hub. That is exactly why it sometimes is cheaper to fly DUS-MUC-EWR compared to MUC-EWR.

Lufthansa did fly a 737-700 between DUS and JFK - it was operated by PrivatAir. Before 2018, the flight was operated by an A330.

I also remember the time when DUS was a real airport and a hub for Air Berlin.

    4. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Klaus_S -- Oh man, good times! So many memories back in the day. It's amazing how quickly the industry shifts.

Delta had seasonal service from Atlanta to DUS from 2006 until 2023 (although it was effectively killed by the pandemic, then came back briefly).

Not super relevant for the context of this story, but more recent than the Lufthansa service.

Gotta say, all lie-flat (even in 2-2g is pretty nice. Have taken La Compagnie on EWR-ORY and MXP; their EWR lounge is good (formerly the Virgin Clubhouse at Terminal B). Only odd thing… their ICAO airline code is ‘DJT’ (unrelated). Anyway, glad to see they’re expanding service!

Düsseldorf Ben. Or Duesseldorf if you may. Ach komm, du kannst es doch besser.

@ InceptionCat -- Du hast natürlich recht, aber...

This gets at the challenge of balancing writing for a mostly English-speaking crowd and being accurate. Most people search "Dusseldorf" or "Munich," without the umlaut or "e." But your point stands, of course, and you are correct.

Unrelated, but did you ever figure out anything with Air Côte d’Ivoire, because I really need to get that product off my list? Okay, I guess I should be...

      The sass

Commenting on this reminded me of Air..Ivory coast...that i didn't get back to you.

      On it now. Sorry.

    3. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ InceptionCat -- THANK YOU! Hah, not trying to be annoying, but I'm about to book Starlux first class, so that leaves only one more carrier, and you gave me some hope with your comment. No pressure. :p

      Düsseldorf Or Duesseldorf.

Just like decided between regime or government.

  7. Peter Guest

In fact, DUS has transatlantic services, even though seasonal, to JFK, MBJ and BGI, courtesy of Condor

DE3784, scheduled to take off tomorrow at 09:45 am

      https://www.dus.com/de-de/fliegen/flightdetail?id=3617414

    2. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Peter -- Funny enough, I see a single Condor flight from DUS to JFK scheduled tomorrow, but that seems like a one-off, and hasn't otherwise operated for the season?

    3. InceptionCat Diamond

It is a charter flight. Condor does these flights once in a while. Like to Hong Kong. I stand to be corrected but DE has flown to GIG and SCL on Charter.

Also, given LH's horrible stant to their labour force Travel agents would rather book peope on Condor than on Discover or LH.
