A transatlantic British Airways flight was delayed after two passengers got into an altercation over a political hat, and it didn’t end well for anyone.
I wasn’t going to cover this, since I don’t usually like these kinds of clickbait stories that just divide us and bring out the lowest common denominator. However, D3kingg posed the question of whether I have “the balls” to report on this, so as someone who is deeply concerned about my perceived masculinity, here you go… 😉
In this post:
Women get into fight over Trump hat on British Airways
This incident happened on Monday, October 28, 2024, and involves British Airways flight BA191, scheduled to fly from London (LHR) to Austin (AUS) with an Airbus A350-1000. It involves two women who didn’t know one another prior to the incident, with the women being in their 40s and 60s. One of the women was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, which is a popular red hat worn by some vocal Trump supporters.
The disagreement apparently started in the gate area, when one woman asked the other woman to take off her MAGA hat, though she refused. The disagreement continued onboard the aircraft, as both women were seated in premium economy.
The situation between the two passengers got so bad that the woman who was offended by the other traveler’s hat ended up getting physical with the woman wearing the MAGA hat, and then punches were exchanged between both travelers.
At that point, around 12:45PM, the crew called police for assistance. The travelers both ended up being removed from the flight. No arrests were made, though both women claim affray against one another, and police continue to investigate the incident.
The flight was initially supposed to depart at 12:10PM, but the flight ended up pushing back at 2:11PM, and taking off at 2:35PM, quite a bit behind schedule.
My take on this British Airways MAGA hat incident
What’s my take on this incident? First of all, I’ve gotta be honest, I’m a bit surprised that we haven’t seen more of these incidents in recent times, given how soon the election is, and how divided the country is, with the two sides living in completely different realities. Regardless of my own political beliefs, this is pretty straightforward:
- You should never get into a confrontation with another passenger; if you have a concern, you should respectfully bring it to the attention of an airline employee
- Even beyond that, it’s totally unacceptable to assault someone (physically or verbally) because you disagree with them
If this situation happened as presented, and the one woman punched the passenger with a MAGA hat on, then shame on her. This has nothing to do with politics, it has to do with being a decent person.
Now, I’ve reviewed British Airways’ contract of carriage regarding dress code and clothing, and I don’t actually see anything that would be relevant, which would prevent someone from wearing a controversial hat.
I think this is a bit trickier to handle for airlines that have policies whereby they ban “offensive clothing,” since that’s very open ended, and we’ve long seen airlines struggle with where to draw the line here.
The best thing you can do if you disagree with someone — especially if they’re wearing something that you feel is trying to trigger other people — is to ignore them. People wear “bold” things because they want attention, so by engaging with them, you’re typically giving them what they want.
Bottom line
A British Airways flight was delayed after two passengers got into a fight over a MAGA hat. One passenger was offended by another passenger’s hat and asked her to remove it. She refused, and this ended up leading to a physical altercation, and the flight was delayed by around two hours.
This is pretty straightforward — you should never get in a fight with another passenger on an aircraft. If you have a concern, bring it to the attention of an airline employee, and let them deal with it (if there’s anything that can be done).
"The flight was initially supposed to depart at 12:10PM, but the flight ended up pushing back at 2:11PM, and taking off at 2:35PM, quite a bit behind schedule."
Based on my BA experiences, that is just business as usual.
I never realized that in my many travel adventures I was in the company of so many intolerant, hateful people. People that can be triggered into violence by a hat. Don't know what's worse the Karen who started the fight or those of you justifying her actions.
This is an easy one. You should never physically engage someone just for wearing a MAGA hat (or a camo Harris Walz hat, etc. etc.). It shouldn't be that hard for adults to be civil and the best action is to ignore. Also, it's far more annoying to someone wearing MAGA gear to get absolutely no reaction than to trigger a liberal.
Even truly offensive symbols should be dealt with by going to an airline employee - not confronting yourself.
I need a whole fight scene based on this incident.
Generally speaking, I avoid political debates on planes, especially since the society got so divided and the views so entrenched (i.e., in my own country, since 1992). In case other pax are seeking the debate, I am trying to refuse politely. If they insist, I call the cabin crew.
Needless to say that I am feeling unhappy about this societal division, but I learnt to live with it.
Clickbait article. Don’t pretend you only wrote this because someone challenged you to. This is the worst type of article especially with a divided election. Also the woman with the hat shouldn’t have been removed from the plane. Per the facts presented it is entirely the fault of the other female passenger.
If both women were throwing punches when the FAs arrived, both are getting tossed. It's a quite sensible, clear line to draw that doesn't require anyone to make some sort mini-investigation and then a judgment call over "who started it."
Beat MAGA on Tuesday, not on airplanes.
It's okay to punch Nazi's. The British would understand also.
I don't agree with any physical violence initiated against anyone. MAGA hats mean people are brain-dead though, so just give them their space to live in their deluded world. Most people find it hilarious that anyone wears a MAGA hat.
How is that hat "controversial"? Would a Obummer, Biden, Killary, or Kumalat hat be deemed controversial?
This post is a joke.
Well I would say wearing a Trump hat in a country where he is deeply unpopular is only asking for trouble. I unequivocally condemn violence unleashed by the other lady, and support freedom of expression. But why not dress and act in a civil manner in public places (especially in foreign countries), while making your voice heard at the ballot box as a citizen performing his or her civic duties?
Hateful conduct by a fascist liberal. Never attack another person and try to censor their free speech. Nutty people.
"Never attack another person and try to censor their free speech."
Yet one party has nominated a presidential candidate that has told his supported to assault protestors and journalists...
Symbols of 1930's Germany would also invoke trouble on a plane if worn in the form of a hat. A large percentage of the world see MAGA as being no different.
I detest Trump and the MAGA cult but to say they are "no different" than literal Nazis is hyperbolic. Trump is a regular fascist, not a genocidal fascist.
@Watson
You're right that Trump isn't a genocidal fascist.
Because your great leader Benjamin Netanyahu is.
@Watson
Trump isn't a genocidal fascist...yet.
The message in the hat is right, America was previously GREAT until 1492, then it went downhill.
As much as I hate zionistic symbols, considering them worst of all, including national-socialistic and communistic, I would not go to direct confrontation with anyone unless that person makes a direct contact with me regarding those symbols.
Quite the additive comment. And what do you consider "zionistic symbols" dear Vasya?
Zionist symbols are everything that is connected to territory called Israel.
Guess, you are a party of joy voter. Disgusting anti-Semite.
There is a big difference between being anit-Semite and anti-Zionist.
Well that is a nice, well-trodden cliche used quite liberally by anti-semites worldwide. Thanks again for the valuable contribution!
That people on the political left have a certain set of opinions, just as people do in other parts of the ideological spectrum, is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is how often the opinions of those on the left are accompanied by hostility and even hatred. ~ Thomas Sowell
I guess January 6th put that opinion to rest.
Xin Loi: Totally correct.
TravelinWilly: You better get a grip on reality; your comment is insane!
Can OMMAT take a stance here? Is OMAAT MAGA or WOKE? Please let your readers know.
Cultist gonna support the Cult...it is unfortunately where we are today

Lol...
My thoughts on the hat situation? This woman is a pretty bad "ambassador" for her beliefs, and I'd be saying the same if it were the other way. But at the end of the day, it's just another progressive doing things they accuse fascists of doing, and another conservative wearing Trump merch. That stuff must sell well.
I loathe President Trump and his MAGA agenda, but it is really silly, and frankly embarrassing to wage domestic political fights in front of a foreign country. It's very unfair to the rest of the passengers on the flight who are just trying to get from Point A to Point B on time. The police at LHR were absolutely correct to remove the two women involved. If you can't keep your cool on a plane,...

It's very unfair to the rest of the passengers on the flight who are just trying to get from Point A to Point B on time. The police at LHR were absolutely correct to remove the two women involved. If you can't keep your cool on a plane, you don't deserve to fly. Full stop. On a separate note, it does paint an even worse perception of America's divisions in the eyes of the UK public. But I'm curious, how is it that BA didn't ask the person wearing the hat to remove political clothing, similar to the US airlines from time to time? Given Trump is very unpopular in UK, you'd think this would have been implemented.
so the person wearing the hat who was attacked has no right to defend themselves?
Honestly, this could have been avoided all together by both persons. The attacker could have just ignored the MAGA woman, or just give a mild eye roll or sigh in disgust, rather than try to go in full on attack mode. And as for the lady in the MAGA hat, while I condemn the violence unleashed on her, personally wearing such divisive clothing while being in a public place such as an airport (especially in...

And as for the lady in the MAGA hat, while I condemn the violence unleashed on her, personally wearing such divisive clothing while being in a public place such as an airport (especially in a foreign country where the leader in question is deeply unpopular, but this would apply anywhere) is only asking for trouble. In Britain, it's typically a norm to keep political views to yourselves, so she made a conscious choice to attract attention. This is a problem of today's society, where people feel like they need to publicise every single opinion they have to the whole world. You have the right to free expression, but wouldn't it be best if you just wore something uncontroversial, and make your voice heard at the ballot box like in any free society?
A MAGA hat is offensive.
The Nazi rally at madison square garden the other day just summed up the nasty, racist, knuckle dragging scum they are.
That orange troglodyte attempting to defend that so called comedian who made numerous racist jokes.
Should he lose the election it will be January 6 all over and most likely far worse, as he will dispute the result.
Great nazi rally with all the Jews in attendance or did you miss that part?
Why are people so easily offended these days? When I was young we had a saying - sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me. How I long for the days of past!
Zionist Jews are the Nazis of the 21st century, Alan.
Just how did you know how many Jewish people were there in the crowds of long and staten islanders ?
Offended ? Are you deaf as well as stupid ? Did you hear what was said ???
Trump is a racist, knuckle dragger.
Back to the old days ? When was that 1939-45 ? Did you brush off your schtutztaffel uniform ?
Trump supporters are the most vile people we’ve seen...

The idea that over 45% of the country are vile because they support a sleaze bag for President over Harris just doesn’t gel with my experiences. But a lot of people who have a knee-jerk hatred for the federal government seem to give a break to the sleazy guy in hopes that he breaks the federal government which they disdain to some degree or another and to scupper the hopes of those on the other...

But given all the past respectable leaders of the Republican Party seem to know how bad Trump is as a person and for the country and are de facto endorsing Harris, it’s a pretty bad sign that there are still so many Trump supporters that I expect Trump to win the electoral college vote in this election. Sad period for America, great period for Putin and others who want the US to a be a “has-been”.
Be a nationalist, vote against Trump and for Harris.
Gary "View from the Clickbait" lives in Austin. I wonder if he's related to one of the combatants.
So the story is obviously a fake.
The flight was from from London (LHR) to Austin (AUS).
Only liberals would go this route, and between those specific airports. ha ha ha
Because only liberals would fly to Texas... Austin might be blue but the suburbs surrounding it aren't Portland
Wearing a baseball cap on an aircraft; or anywhere, for that matter; should be punishable by death. You're not a 9yo at Little League. Grow up.
I agree and guys wearing them backwards have to have a iq below 75.
Where’s my popcorn?
Even if this was a violation of clothing policy, it is not a passenger's job to enforce that. You go to the attendant. This goes with any shirt you find offensive.
Also, coming from an absolute anti-MAGA, I would never in my right mind try starting a fight over it. Internally probably make a comment to myself or do an eyeroll but I can't imagine being that offended by a hat you would start a fight on an airplane.
Ah yes, flight 191.... totally not cursed. ;)
FUN FACT: the inaugural for this flight, took a heavy lighting strike on its departure, disabling some systems. They decided to continue on, regardless, only to discover the full extent of the damage later.
But oh well, it still fared way better than the other flights 191. :(
I'm embarrassed this happened on the way to AUS. We're supposed to be smarter than that.
Exactly. Heathrow is such a busy hub, with so many people from around the world arriving, connecting, and departing. Why not set a good example for others on how to behave in a civil and orderly manner (I'm not in any way suggesting that only Americans or Westerners are capable of this)? Is this a good way to improve the perception of others outside of the US about Americans and the state of the country?...

It's sad to see how our politics has become so extreme, violent, and disorderly over the last 15 odd years or so.
Did you cover the story of California-Dulles flight on United where a Florida man seated in the back of the plane assaulted the head of an unrelated sleeping passenger in row 12 while the Florida man was on the way back from the plane lavatory?
People are nuttier than ever on flights, but nutty passenger was noticeable even back when Air Berlin was still around flying TATL flights.
I bought this upon myself and Ben answered the bell. Now I’m embarrassed. :)
Well you are a low IQ individual (aka MAGA base) based on your posting history, so not surprised
@UA-NYC
I’m not a MAGA. They are idiots and I would never attend a Trump “rally.” My slightly above average IQ shines when conversing with someone from rural Louisiana.
With all the tension at the moment why this person thought it would be a good idea to wear a MAGA hat on a plane defies logic. Not to victimize the victim.
Again, if you're going to wear ANYTHING that is controversial about race, politics, gender or religion, fully expect all outcomes and reactions. That is all.
Basically, just wear a blank t-shirt in public and you'll be just fine
Wearing a white cotton t-shirt could be perceived as pro-slavery and a symbol of white supremacy, so it's better to not wear a shirt at all. /s
Lol, touche.
If you aren't going to wear a t-shirt, at least wear overalls.
Bet this wouldn't have happened if the apparel touted Harris/Waltz.
You're right, Trump supporters are known to be peaceful. Take January 6th for instance
Nothing says “Yes, I have (figurative) balls, Mr. Troll” like taking the bait and doing what the troll wants you to do…
US Constitution doesn't apply on the ground at Heathrow... UK has laws about inciting violence.
Totally agree that UK law applied at Heathrow, but I’m not sure the relevance. First, the US also has laws against inciting violence. Second, as much as I abhor Trump and his hats, I’m not sure wearing them would be classified as inciting violence under either UK or US law.
Meh, showing support for someone who tried to overthrow our government seems about as close to inciting violence as you can get.
I read you because I think you're generally great about avoiding stuff like this. Once you get here, there's always a more clickbaity story to report. I get it, but I'm a little sad that you didn't have the balls to not cover it. :) Maybe I'm the only one that feels that way though.
@ Ash -- Hah, totally fair! This is a one-off.
I never realized that in my many travel adventures I was in the company of so many intolerant, hateful people. People that can be triggered into violence by a hat. Don't know what's worse the Karen who started the fight or those of you justifying her actions.
"Make flights on-time departures great again"
Of all the reasons to get kicked off a flight, and likely banned from a global airline, another person's hat surely isn't one of them.
The party of "love and tolerance" strikes again.
My body, my choice! Unless we disagree with it… then you’re a nazi anti-vaxxer if you try to advocate for your bodily autonomy!
First off, the woman who found the Trump hat offensive should never have initiated violence. No excuse for that behavior. She does not speak for all progressives just like you don’t for all conservatives.
Second, terminating or not terminating a pregnancy is a woman’s personal choice and does not affect the public health at large. Your choosing not to get vaccinated, reducing herd immunity, and leading to resurgence of once-eradicated diseases very much does....

They are not equivalent issues when public health and safety are at stake.
It always amuses me how the crowd that at first said "if you're so afraid of the virus then stay home", then when PRIVATE businesses imposed vaccine mandates then all of a sudden it's "mUH fREedUMBs!". Same people who call liberals snowflakes and then start hyperventilating when someone says to them "happy holidays" or they see two dudes holding hands. Bunch of hypocrite snowflake weirdos.
@Aaron
You really are a whiny conservative idiot.
Except as a general rule we condemn stuff like this, just like Ben did. We don't get into Olympic style gymnastics to explain the Dear Leader's latest xenophobic, racist or misogynistic tweet du jour and we don't "very fine people" this kind of stuff. We also don't drive with giant blue flags in our Priuses. We don't do any of that stuff because we're not in a cult.
Let me just tell you that you're setting bar too high for someone who's obsessed with politics.
Can't wait for OMAAT audience to defend this woman for literally cringing over something that is protected by constitution.
Maybe laws and rights doesn't extend to their enemies? What a North Korea-ish logic.
@ Mason -- "Can't wait for OMAAT audience to defend this woman for literally cringing over something that is protected by constitution."
While this woman absolutely had the right to wear the hat, I'm not sure the Constitution is the reason she had the right to do so in the UK... ;-)
@Ben Schlappig
In both the US and the UK freedom of speech/expression is protected.
And I've never heard that the UK has a law that especially bans supporting Trump, including wearing a MAGA hat, so maybe you're right that I brought constitution to this was a bit too far but that doesn't meam that what that woman did is unlawful.
@ Mason -- So we came to the same conclusion!
"Mason" isn't very bright under his MAGA cap...
@TravelinPenis
Do you think that I said "Let me just tell you that you're setting bar too high for someone who's obsessed with politics." for no reason, instead of just saying liberals?
Trump and his goons suck as much as Democrats and its goons.
There's no better or worse of those two parties that ruin the the US.

I'm sure that I know the effects of Trump's presidency to the collapse of the US' alliance network.
Even the former presidents have warned the nation enough about how much of a bullsh*t this is.
You're the prime example of that.
Mason triggered because he wanted some people here to defend the crazy lady who hates red hats and it turns out nobody likes her for doing that kind of stuff. And that is making Mason mad I guess?
@Michael
It's perfectly okay for those here to not defend that woman, as they naturally should.
What's not okay is TravelinPenis being himself.
In the UK there are limits to freedom of speech. Plenty of people get prosecuted for inciting violence or libel.
There are limits to freedom of speech in every country that has it. Ask the people who stopped traffic in the UK to protest climate change how it’s going for them this week.
The best defense that I could give regarding the Liberal Woman's actions is, wait for it... Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Something similar to the Deranged Woman at the Harris Houston rally did screaming at a child in the stroller. TDS is a very powerful mental illness that can cause many social and violent ugly behavior in public locations.
The only Trump Derangement Syndrome there ever was is continuing to pretend inciting an insurrection, stealing classified documents, writing love letters to foreign dictators and rage tweeting at 2 in the morning about how “low-talent and highly overrated actress Meryl Streep was so mean to me”, is perfectly acceptable behavior for an American president, let alone a normal, sane human being. And the sad part is that your man of the people Lord and Savior...

Because you’re in a cult. But please go on about how some random woman who isn’t president threw a tantrum in an airport.

How exactly is wearing a MAGA hat racist or fascist?
@NG
Because TravelinPenis is just a braindead liberal whose mind includes nothing but demonizing conservatives.
In fact, liberals are more racist than conservatives.
Just look at DEI - it's simply a racist rule that discriminates white and Asian people to give unqualified black/Hispanic chances of getting a job.
@Mason don’t try dragging Asians onto your side with your rant. Asians have been discriminated against just like black/Hispanic people!
Right, we have been discriminated most of the time by black people. Rarely by whites and hispanic.
"we have been discriminated most of the time by black people. Rarely by whites"
Don't recall it being Black people who rounded you up into internment camps. But do go on.
@ImmortalSynn I may not completely agree with here with @Jeffrey Lin since anyone can be racist or prejudice. But I guess he is referring to the more recent incidents in America. It is ridiculous too because it all started by an old white dude with his stupid and discriminatory “kung flu” comment. It is not helpful at all when to comes to racial solidarity. It is ridiculous too because it all started by an old white dude with his stupid and discriminatory “kung flu” comment. It is not helpful at all when to comes to racial solidarity. Yes, there are violence done by African-Americans against the Asians/Asian Americans but it is possibly a misconception. You can see this NBC report:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/viral-images-show-people-color-anti-asian-perpetrators-misses-big-n1270821#
Also, what I am wondering about is the incidents that have not been reported.
You must live in a different corner of America than the other corners of America. Or didn’t you notice the anti-Asian hostility in places where fewer than 3% are African-Americans after Covid hit? Guess you are just a “China virus” Trump supporter at this point, but would love to be wrong on that point.
@Jeffrey Lin
Don’t make me laugh! If it wasn’t for the blood sweat and tears of the African American struggle, people who look like you would still be riding at the back of the bus!
Exactly. It was the civil rights movement led by African-Americans and supported by allies of other ethnic backgrounds which opened the door for the inclusion of Asians in the American Dream and propelled this nation to be the great country it has become even with growing pains and challenges.
Racists like Trump would have excluded Asians born in America from being considered co-equal Americans if not for the civil rights movement.
Mason, that’s not what DEI does.
"In fact, liberals are more racist than conservatives.

Quite possibly the stupidest comment seen on here this week.
@Aaron
Did you mean the most truthful? It seems like you liberals see something correct as stupid.
No wonder why you so easily get swayed by Democrats' propaganda.
You only need to look at the white power rally at Madison square garden. A MAGA hat is the new Nazi party hat.
I am surprised they didn’t sing the Horst-wessel song.
@TravelinPenis
Says someone supports multiple genders theory. Pseudoscience and hypocrisy - the stuff libs say - sounds more dumb than whatever the cons say, no?
@Mason
Today I learned there are people who believe only a single gender exists. Giving flat earthers a run for their money!
Here here indeed. And look how you’ve now triggered them
I can’t wait for all you Harris-suckers to whine and cry after November 5.
Quick scan of recent OMAAT posts: engagement lagging.
NOT ANYMORE
